A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Aug. 11-17:

Last year on Aug. 11, 2023: Former Mixed Martial Arts world welterweight champion Logan Storley defeated Brennan Ward (17-7) by technical knockout in the main event of Bellator 298 on Showtime at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls. The Webster native is now 15-2 and it is the seventh time Storley has fought in his home state. Storley is the No. 1 contender (Ward was ranked seventh) and hopes to get another shot eventually at Bellator welterweight champion Yaroslav Amosov of the Ukraine, who is responsible for both of Storley’s losses.

10 years ago on Aug. 17, 2014: The Renner Monarchs defeated Vermillion 11-3 to repeat as the State A amateur tourney champions in Mitchell. It was Renner’s 17th title and ninth since 2001. During the regular season, Vermillion swept Renner in two games. Renner lost their opener in the 2014 double-elimination tourney. Renner’s Tim Huber was the tourney MVP and teammate Michael Clapp won the tourney batting title.

20 years ago on Aug. 17, 2004: Joe Amo, 38, of Rapid City shattered the world land speed record for 1,000-cc motorcyles on his 1990 Kawasaki with an average speed of 240.913 over a mile at the Bonneville Speedway in Utah. On his run before breaking the record, Amo managed to get his bike stopped after blowing a rear tire while traveling over 200 mph. The previous record was 201 mph.

30 years ago on Aug. 13, 1994: Mike Larson made a hole-in-one at the Meadowbrook course in Rapid City. On the same day, a different Mike Larson made a hole-in-one at the Elks course in Rapid City.

40 years ago on Aug. 12, 1984: Sprint car driver Doug Wolfgang won the 24th annual Knoxville (IA) Nationals. The Sioux Falls man earned $20,000.

50 years ago on Aug. 17, 1974: The 55-member Aberdeen Elks Diving Team won the South Dakota AAU Diving Championships for the fourth year in a row under coach Judy Mecseji. Its last lost was three years ago by a single point at a meet in Minnesota. Mecseji was one of the nation’s best divers in the 1950s as a youth growing up in Omaha. At the end of the year, the team was named the 1974 South Dakota Independent Team of the Year by the SD Sportswriters Association. National qualifiers from the Aberdeen team this season were Michelle Bonnet, Mary Weber and Mark Mecseji.
