MADISON – Aberdeen Roncalli captured a couple of places and will secure another one when action resumes today during the singles portion of the Madison Invitational Tennis Tournament on Friday.

River Haskell won her first-round match at flight two before suffering an injury, leading to a default and a forfeit. She still finished in fourth place.

Keira Rivett won two matches on the way to a fifth-place finish at flight four, and Gianna Cihak won a pair of matches and will play for third place when action continues today.

“Gianna had a great day,” said Roncalli coach Jason Haskell. “Even in her losses she looked like she is gaining lots of confidence.”

Raley Haskell won two matches and lost a pair of matches, both in tiebreaks at flight three.

“Raley had an awesome day, also,” Coach Haskell said. “She fought off three match points to get a match point of her own and finally succumbing in her Sioux Falls Christian match.”

Haskell said a lot of good tennis was played during the first day of the tournament.

The event concludes with doubles action today.

Roncalli played without the services of Josie Mitzel, who injured her ankle in practice.

“We are battling some injuries here early,” Coach Haskell said. “Hopefully after doubles (Saturday) we can ease the week into next weekend and be back full power when we had to Brookings next weekend.”

RALEY HASKELL: def. Brooke Beuhner, Lennon, 8-7 (7-1); lost to Ann Hoek, Huron, 8-6; def. Elise Bowers, Pierre, 8-6; lost to Eisley Roark, Sioux Falls Christian, 8-7 (10-8).

Fourth Flight

KEIRA RIVETT: lost to Erie Reinicke, St. Thomas More, 8-1; def. Jericho Jones, Milbank, 8-0; def. Mia Barnett, Vermillion, 8-6. FIFTH PLACE.

Sixth Flight

GIANNA CIHAK: def. Shelby Poncelet, Madison, 8-5; def. Liberty Herweh, Spearfish, 8-0; lost to Sophia Heynen, Sioux Falls Christian, 8-1.
