It had been a frustrating summer for Maria Broksieck at Brown County Speedway, but those memories were replaced by a fantastic finish for the Goodwin driver this past weekend.

Broksieck wiped out a 32-point deficit in the Street Stock division and captured the track championship on the final event of the points race Saturday night. Broksieck was on the wrong end of two photo finishes earlier this summer, but won back-to-back features this past weekend to vault to the top of the points standings.

“I tell you what, for the amount of DNFs and just crazy things that we’ve had happen out here, it’s pretty unreal,” Broksieck said. “I’m kind of at a loss for words finishing the season off the way that we did.”

After her win on Friday, Broksieck had cut Chris Serr’s lead down to 16 points entering Saturday’s competition and sliced that down to six points heading into the feature. When the Aberdeen driver exited the track early in the race, it left the door wide open for Broksieck.

“I don’t want to win that way,” she said, “but it did take some of that track-point mentality out of the race, and it let me race my race.”

Broksieck trailed the entire way, and after losing late leads earlier this year, it was somewhat fitting that she took the lead on the final lap to win the feature.

“Cautions at the right times and patience,” Brokseick said, “that’s what won that race.”

Broksieck, who has won nearly a dozen track championships in all, will now try to cap off a triple crown season by winning titles in Aberdeen, Miller and Watertown.

“This year I’m hoping that we can finish up strong in Watertown also and I will be track champion at all three tracks that I race this year,” she said, “and I’ve never done that before.”

Winning track championships at Brown County Speedway was something a pair of Aberdeen drivers had never done before Saturday night.

Josh Skorczewski won his first title in the Late Model division, capping a memorable summer.

“All around that time that my daughter was born is when we got on our hot streak and reeled off quite a few wins,” Skorczewski said.

He said facing stiff competition has helped him to become a better driver through the years.

“When I first got into this class there was even more drivers that were here on a weekly basis or we raced three nights a week, that if you looked at national points, all in the top 10,” he said. “There were probably 5-6 guys that on any night that could win and all of them had a chance to win national championships, if they didn’t. I think that’s what really helped make me the driver that I am is the competition that I’ve had.”

That elite competition continues to push Skorczewski to be the best that he can be.

“Still to this day we have (Chad) Becker and (Kent) Arment that are past champions, and currently still winning and running up front all the time,” Skorczewski said.

Stewart Schipke won his first title in 29 years of racing by claiming the Super Stock track championship.

“The big thing is, the years past I’ve never really ran full seasons with the business. I was always too busy,” Schipke said. “Now, I’m retired from the work and sold my business. Now, I’m just concentrating on racing.”

Schipke, who turns 62-years-old today, said that it has been a good year of racing.

“This is a newer car. It’s working really well,” he said. “I’m driving half-way decent.”

Other track championships went to Taylor Schmidt of Bath in the Midwest Modified, and Mike Stearns of Aberdeen in the Modified division.

Other feature winners on Saturday were Todd Stark of Watertown in Midwest Mod, Tyler Peterson of Hickson, N.D. in Late Model, Dylan Zabel of Selby in Modified, and Trevor Nelson of Warner in Super Stock.

Racing concludes for the season with the two-day Big Buck Nationals Friday and Saturday.
