WARNER – The defending Class B runner-up Warner Monarchs opened the season with a straight-sets sweep over Aberdeen Christian Thursday night. The second-rated Monarchs claimed the Lake Region Conference volleyball victory by set scores of 25-21, 25-13 and 25-18.

While the final tally went down as a sweep, the visiting Knights didn’t make it an easy one, as Christian held a 14-13 lead midway through the opening set before Warner was able to find its stride.

Kyleigh Schopp led the Monarch attack with 17 kills and a pair of blocks at the net. Reagan Wood finished with 16 assists, while Haleigh Holt notched 11 digs and two service aces.

Aberdeen Christian was led by Payton Skarin with 10 kills and four blocks. Brynn Powell finished with nine digs, while Sophie Glynn had a pair of aces. Ari Johnson also notched five blocks for the Knights.

“The girls played great tonight,” said Christian coach Sara Powell. “A few jitters and some net errors, but couldn’t be more proud.”

Coach Powell noted Brynn Powell’s defensive contributions in the absence of an injured Alexis Isakson.

“(She) stepped up and played great,” Coach Powell noted. “Ari and Payton played the net well.”
