FAULKTON – A pair of area standout runners added to their resumes on Wednesday afternoon during the Lakeside Invitational Cross Country Meet in Faulkton. Northwestern’s Ella Boekelheide won the girls’ race, while Miller’s Pierce Baumberger topped the boys’ field.

Boekelheide recorded a time of 19:07.39, and Baumberger finished in a clocking of 17:59.10.

Potter County won the girls’ team crown, and North Central grabbed the boys’ team championship. There were 24 teams and 97 varsity runners competing in the event.

“It was a much higher quality meet than last year,” said Roncalli coach Casey Steele. “It was some pretty tough competition with new faces.”

Madeline Nye of Miller was third in the girls’ race, Tara Blachford of Northwestern was fourth, and Autumn Fallis of Highmore-Harrold was fifth.

North Central’s Gabe Johnson was second and teammate Avery Wells was fifth in the boys’ race. Milo Sumption of Frederick was third and Korbin Stark of Faulkton was fourth.

Aberdeen Roncalli was led by two runners in the top 10 in the girls’ race. Addison Cassady was eighth, and Hazel Kannegieter was 10th. Matt Peterson led the Roncalli boys with a 16th place finish.

The Cavaliers were just coming off a meet on Monday in Clear Lake.

“This week for us is load-up week. Racing on Monday and Wednesday is really tough on kids, but it’s even tougher when you go to two really hilly courses,” Steele said. “Times were affected, but I was really pleased with the competitive effort of the kids.”

He said the tough week will come with payoffs in the near future as the Cavaliers prepare for their biggest meets of the season.

“For each hard mile the kids race, if it’s a quality race that they did, and our varsity kids did that on Monday, it takes a day for every mile that you’ve raced hard, to recover,” Steele said. “We weren’t even recovered yet, so it’s kind of by design. We go and hit this hard and the payoff from these types of workouts, races that we’re using at workouts, the payoff comes in 2-3 weeks.”

Roncalli competes heads to Groton for a meet on Monday.
