Another aggressive effort led to a third straight victory for Aberdeen Roncalli Tuesday night.
The Cavaliers got stronger throughout the match on the way to a 25-20, 25-15, 25-14 non-conference volleyball sweep over Florence-Henry at Roncalli Gym.
Roncalli concentrated on cutting down on its errors from a prior match last week.
“I made the girls watch game film,” said Roncalli coach Leesa Ware. “We knew going into this that it was going to be a little bit tougher of a match.”
The effects from last week’s match against Tiospa Zina carried over into the first set. The aggressiveness from the Cavaliers allowed for a close opening set.
“I told the girls it’s like we’re going back-and-forth and back-and-forth,” Ware said. “I told them we’re not playing like ourselves.”
The Cavaliers were up 9-5 before Florence-Henry scored six straight points, eventually grabbing a 15-12 advantage, prompting a timeout from Ware.
“I told them we just need to clean it up and play Cavalier volleyball. We’re just not playing to our potential. I felt like we were just kind of playing down,” said Ware. “They really cleaned things up. We cleaned up our serving errors, we cleaned up our hitting errors.”
The Cavaliers took the message to heart and were up to the challenge.
“We all just kind of knew like we gotta pick it up or otherwise we’re going to embarrass ourselves,” said Roncalli junior outside hitter Morgan Helms. “We just knew we had to pick it up in order to win the game.”
Reducing hitting errors was a main focus for the Cavaliers in practice this past week, and it showed in the final two sets. Their hitting percentage jumped from 80% last week to 88% against Florence-Henry.
“Our hitting improved tremendously tonight from last Thursday. … All in all, I was very happy with their effort,” said Ware. “We focused a lot on hitting in Friday’s practice and did a lot of hitting drills, and just a lot of serve receive. And I think that that really stood out.”

The Cavaliers improved on their hitting, but a tough and aggressive defense from the Falcons made it hard to score points at times. Roncalli used backline communication with the front row hitters on where to hit the ball.
“I always tell the back row that they have the best seat in the house. Help your hitter, whether it be a cross shot, whether it be a line, while it be a tip. You have to help your hitters out,” Ware said. “They need to communicate that to their hitters and I think we’re getting that more and more.”
As the Cavaliers closed in on the sweep, the hometown crowd gave the squad a boost to finish off the match as Helms stepped up to the service line.
Helms used the juice to connect for five straight serves, ending the match on an ace.
“It was really exciting. The atmosphere of the gym was really, really good. … It made me really motivated to get that one,” said Helms. “That was really awesome tonight. They just brought a lot of energy, and it was really needed.”

The Cavaliers will close out the week with two tough opponents, playing at Groton on Thursday and at Hamlin on Saturday.
“Groton has a really good history of always being a solid team,” said Ware. “The girls have homework to do again and watch game film.”
The Cavaliers know they will have to come out fast and limit their mistakes.
“They’re going to be really tough. I think it’ll be good matchups,” said Helms. “We’re going to have to come out right away and ready to play.”
