HURON – Aberdeen Central used a team effort to win the boys’ team championship at the Clyde Cotton Invitational Cross Country Meet Saturday morning.

The Golden Eagles finished with 49 points to edge fellow Eastern South Dakota Conference foe Brookings by two points atop the boys’ division.

“We competed hard and ran well today. We’ve had solid practices this week and things are starting to fall into place,” said Central boys’ coach Greg Murley. “We have work to do yet, but look forward to battling Brookings again as they are high contenders in our ESD.”

Trevin Lounsbury of Brookings won the boys’ race in a time of 16:07.62 with Central’s Carson Urlacher second in a time of 16:20.26.

Central put three runners in the top 10 with Patrick Severson eighth, and Tate DeVries 10th. Teammates Max Nelson and Esten Foss finished 14th, and 15th, respectively.

“Carson Urlacher put in another solid race today to finish second. Carson put in a great summer of training and works hard everyday to get better,” Murley said. “Solid team effort today with 5 in the top 15.”

Central also won the boys’ JV team title with Kyson Fayant winning the race.

“Any day we can load the bus winning both the varsity and JV as a team, is a good day,” Murley said.

The Central girls also had a strong outing, finishing fourth in team points. Tea Area won the meet.

Juna Ramey finished fifth for the Golden Eagles in a time of 19:58.65.

“On a windy day again, Juna put up a nice time, sub 20 on a day like this is great,” said Central girls’ coach Eric Pedersen. “Allie Novstrup (who finished 10th) set a huge PR with 20:24.”

Pedersen was pleased with the way the girls handled the less than ideal conditions on the day.

“We talk about wind and heat and the weather a lot, being as variables outside of our control, and to control the controllable,” Pedersen said, “and I was very pleased with how this group did with that today.”

The Golden Eagles head west for a meet on Friday in Rapid City, site of this year’s State Meet.

“We are looking forward to a little preview of the state course in Rapid City,” Pedersen said.
