Golden Eagles cap tennis weekend with two wins

BROOKINGS – Aberdeen Central split a pair of Eastern South Dakota tennis matches to wrap up the Brookings Jamboree Saturday afternoon, claiming an 8-1 win over Huron before falling 6-3 to Watertown.

After a taxing three-match day on Friday, the Golden Eagles came out swinging against Huron to begin Saturday’s action. Central swept all three doubles matches and five of six singles contests.

“I was really pleased with how the girls performed,” said Central coach John Vogel of his team’s efforts in the win. “We’ve been experimenting with various flight three doubles teams recently, and I think we found one with Mady (Holman) and Estelle (Riggs).”

Holman and Riggs, making their season doubles debut, won by a 10-2 count over Huron’s Madeline Kleinsasser and Idella Meyer.

Vogel was equally impressed with the Golden Eagles’ play in the singles matches against Huron.

“Huron is usually very scrappy, so you have to play well to beat them,” he said.

Central then wrapped up the weekend of action – five matches in total – with a hard-fought loss to Watertown.

“Things started well with us taking two of the three flights of doubles,” Vogel said. “But Watertown is a historically strong singles team, and they are again this year.”

Chloe Ladner was the lone Golden Eagle to come away with a singles win in that match, a 10-7 win over Sophia Nichols at flight four.

“Kudos to Chloe on her victory,” Vogel said. “She is really striking the ball well right now.”

Central will take most of the next week off before returning to action next Saturday for a triangular with Mitchell and Brandon Valley in Mitchell.
