No nail-biter this time around.

After edging Huron in a five-set marathon earlier this month, Aberdeen Central dominated play from start to finish Tuesday night. The Golden Eagles never trailed at any stage on the way to a 25-19, 25-17, 25-19 Eastern South Dakota Conference volleyball victory at Golden Eagles Arena.

“We all picked each other up,” said Central junior Kenadi Withers, “our energy, our confidence, it was just so much better than it was when we first played in Huron.”

Central served aggressively, featured a well-balanced attack at the net, and kept Huron on its heels from the opening serve this time around.

“I thought we served really well. We were pretty efficient,” said Central coach Jackie Bindenagel. “I think we had three kids hit double digit kills, so that makes a big difference. We were pretty balanced.”

The Golden Eagles quickly built a 10-4 lead in the opening set, raced out to an 8-3 lead to start the second, and then built a commanding 11-1 advantage in the final set.

“Getting off to those big leads that we had helped tremendously. Everybody just did good. Everybody played their part,” Withers said. “Our block was good, our hits were good, our backrow was good, our sets were good. We all just did good.”

Central featured a three-pronged attack at the net. Outside hitters Lauryn Burckhard (14 kills), Kamdyn Borge (11 kills), and Withers (10 kills), all found their way through and around any blocks that Huron put up on the other side of the net.

“I can think about two times the ball came back at us,” Bindenagel said, “but otherwise we were able to use their block, which is something we need to continue to do.”

Bindenagel is hoping to get even more people involved as the season progresses.

“We’re continuing to work with our middles to get them involved,” Bindenagel said, “so we’re hoping a month from now we’ve got even more kids that are adding to that mix.”

The lefthanded Withers is a challenge to match up with defensively because she can go cross court, down the line and also hit effective tips.

When asked how she knew what shot to use, she gave backrow teammates all the credit.

“They’re always calling where to go, where to hit. Just thank them for that,” Withers said. “And Alivia (Miller) places the ball very well where I can just change up what I’m hitting, and what I’m doing.”

Withers also led a strong effort from the service line. While she did not have a single ace, she served eight points, including five straight early in the third set to help secure the sweep.

“I just go back there and hope to get it over and in,” Withers said, “just a decent serve is all we need to get them out of system, not an ace, but just a good serve to get them out of system.”

That philosophy is exactly what the Central coaching staff instructs their servers to do.

“We talk to the kids a lot about you need to serve them out of system, because I feel like when you go back there to serve for an ace, that’s when you miss your serve,” Bindenagel said. “So if you focus on out of system, then those aces get there.”

Central, 6-3 on the season, has three challenging matches coming up: at Yankton on Saturday, at O’Gorman on Monday, and home against Brandon Valley a week from Thursday.

Withers said that the latest win over Huron will give the squad a boost heading into that stretch of matches.

“We got Yankton and O’Gorman and Brandon Valley coming up, which is all three good, tough teams,” Withers said, “and this is definitely going to help us and boost us and pick us up, just like that Lincoln win, that really helped us and picked us up.”
