STURGIS – The Aberdeen Central volleyball program capped off a two-match weekend with a straight-sets sweep (25-5, 25-14, 25-17) of Sturgis Saturday afternoon, a win that came just hours after the Golden Eagles dropped the remaining three sets of their suspended match at Spearfish, falling 3-1 (27-29, 25-22, 31-29, 25-21) to the Spartans.

Central coach Jackie Bindenagel admitted the weekend got off to a strange start after a threat report forced Friday’s match at Spearfish to come to an abrupt halt.

Despite winning the first set on Friday, Central dropped all three sets when play resumed Saturday morning.

While the Golden Eagles didn’t come away with a win, Bindenagel said there were bright spots to be found, including a strong setting performance from Alivia Miller.

“(She) made some really good setting decisions,” Bindenagel said. “She spread the ball around to different hitters.”

Following the Spearfish match, the Golden Eagles immediately jumped on the bus and headed for Sturgis, where Central dominated play from the opening serve. The Scoopers scored just five points in the opening stanza and served only three balls that set.

Central went on to win in convincing fashion in the remaining two sets.

“It was just a nice team effort,” Bindenagel said. “Everyone served well in that match.”

Final stats for the two matches were not immediately available.

Central will host Sioux Falls Lincoln on Tuesday.
