HARTFORD – The Groton girls picked up a key 2-1 win over West Central on Saturday, while the Groton boys ended in a 2-2 draw in Class A soccer action.

The Tigers used a late penalty kick to fuel the girls’ win as West Central lost for just the second time this season.

McKenna Tietz scored on an assist from Laila Roberts in the 22nd minute to give Groton an early lead. The hosts tied it in the 54th minute, setting the stage for the finish. Brooklyn Hansen drew a penalty in the penalty area, and moments later Kennedy Hansen nailed the penalty kick in the 68th minute for the game-winner.

Jaedyn Penning had five saves for the Tigers, who improved to 4-1-1 on the campaign.

In the boys’ contest, Logan Olson scored both goals for Groton, both coming on assists from Ethan Kroll. The Tigers are now 0-2-3 on the year.
