Watertown captured the team title, while local golfers turned in solid rounds in windy conditions during the Hub City Invitational Golf Tournament at Lee Park Golf Course on Tuesday.

The Arrows edged Pierre by four strokes to win the team championship with Aberdeen Roncalli in third place, Aberdeen Central in fourth, and Groton in fifth. Pierre’s Sawyer Sonnenschein won the individual title with a three-under-par 68.

Jackson Ravellette of Central had the best score among the local players, finishing fifth with a 74.

“I just put myself in the right spot to get up and down,” Ravellette said. “It was hard to pick the right club, but just adjusting to the wind. I hit everything pretty solid today. Putting was probably the most important, making the par putts and the birdies.”

The junior, who said his goal was to shoot a 75 on the day, said trying to navigate the wind is difficult to do.

“I’d probably say the hardest wind is the cross wind and knowing where to play it, what side of the green,” Ravellette said. “It will take it back, but sometimes it won’t take it back, but today I just put myself in the right spot.”

Roncalli’s Jesse Hernandez finished in 11th place with a round of 78. He said challenges are to be expected with the windy conditions.

“You just have to realize bad shots are going to happen with this wind,” Hernandez said, “and you’ve just got to come back from them.”

Hernandez said being familiar with the Lee Park course worked to his advantage.

“Reading the greens was pretty easy,” Hernandez said. “Other teams may struggle going from course to course, but when you’re at your home course, it’s just an advantage when you get up to the green, and short game is where it matters the most, it’s where you can make up the most strokes.”

Hernandez said his short game allowed him to shoot the round that he did.

“That kind of saved me on a couple of holes,” Hernandez said, “making some 8-10 footers for par, birdie.”

Overall, Hernandez was pleased with his position, especially playing against competition from bigger schools.

“I’m pretty satisfied with my round,” Hernandez said. “You can always get better, always improve, but getting top 15 at a AA tournament feels pretty good going into the second half of the season.”

Roncalli coach Jon Murdy was pleased with the way the Cavaliers competed in the less than favorable conditions. He said it will help to prepare them for tournaments down the road.

“It’s good to watch the kids compete in not ideal weather,” Murdy said. “Having the weather today, it might happen at regions, it might happen at state, the more competitive rounds that they can get with multiple-different weather, it just gets us better for the rest of the season.”

Of course, edging out cross-town Central in the team standings was also a bonus.

“Everyone has to play the same course, and when you can get a beat a home-town team, it’s always fun,” Murdy said. “Even though it’s my alma mater, their coach Matt Brust and I, we’re good buddies, so it’s always kind of fun to poke at each other.”

Murdy said the key going forward to is make sure his players understand that each score is important in the team standings.

“The biggest thing that we’ve just been trying to tell them is, even if you’re playing bad we’re still going to need your score,” Murdy said, “so we got to figure out a way to get you over the hump and keep on going, so we can get a good team score.”

The Cavaliers are back in action on Thursday, Sept. 12 in Groton.

Other top area finishers included Milbank’s Jonathan DeBoer who was eighth with a 77, Brevin Fliehs of Groton who was 12th with a 78, and Roncalli’s Finn Anderson who was 15th also with a 78.

Like the other golfers, DeBoer said a big challenge on the day was the elements.

“It makes your approach shots really hard,” DeBoer said, “because it’s difficult to judge the wind sometimes.”

The junior, who said his goal was to keep on improving throughout the season, was satisfied with his total during the event.

“For the conditions, I feel I did pretty good,” DeBoer said.
