Central boys claim ESD championship outright

MITCHELL – Aberdeen Central wrapped up sole possession of the Eastern South Dakota Conference title Tuesday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Mitchell in the regular season finale.

Central had secured at least a portion of that title in last Saturday’s win over Yankton, but there will be no sharing now.

“Feels good to wrap up the regular season with a win and an ESD title, to boot,” said Central coach Lance Mohr.

As they did last weekend, the Golden Eagles put themselves on the board early in Tuesday’s game, but unlike Saturday, Central was unable to pull away from the Kernels.

“We didn’t have our cleanest game by any means,” Mohr said. “Part of that was getting this final piece. It was such a road to get here. We scored in the first 10 minutes, and then got a little complacent.”

Central got goals from Tyler Bain and Gavin Yost, plus an own goal to complete the scoring.

Mohr said his squad has mixed feelings about the win.

“They were partly disappointed, because we didn’t play as well as we should have,” he said.

The reality of the accomplishment, however, will settle in with time.

“It almost hasn’t really sunk in, yet,” Mohr said. “They’re obviously excited. But it’s such a long journey, two months to get here, so it’s going to take a day or two to set in.”

The Golden Eagles will likely be home to begin the playoffs, but official seeds, times and opponents will not be determined until all teams have finished their regular season runs.

“We won’t know until late Saturday or Sunday,” Mohr said. “We won today and dropped two spots. That’s just how the seed points play out.”
