HARTFORD – Milbank’s Jonathan DeBoer is tied atop the leaderboard after the opening day of the Class A State Golf Tournament Monday. DeBoer shot a 3-over-par 75, the same as Logan Collette of Dakota Valley. Former Aberdeen Roncalli golfer Harper Schnabel of Sioux Falls Christian is tied for third along with Vincent Vanliere of St. Thomas More at 76.
Dakota Valley leads the team points by 10 strokes over second place Vermillion. Roncalli is in fifth as a team, just five strokes out of fourth place.
“The kids played well today,” said Roncalli coach Jon Murdy. “They had to beat some mental demons.”
The Cavaliers were led by Finn Anderson, who is tied for 14th along with Owen Fischer of Milbank, both with 81s.
Groton’s Carter Simon is tied for 22nd with an 82, just ahead of Roncalli’s Lucas Daggett and Brevin Flilehs of Groton, who both fired an 83.
Roncalli’s other golfers have Jesse Hernandez and Gannon May tied for 38th with an 85, and Matthew Gerlach won is tied for 40th with an 86.

The Cavaliers, who are 10 strokes behind the second place team, will look to move up in the team points when action resumes today.
“I’m happy where we stand right now,” Murdy said. “If the kids have a good day (Tuesday), anything can happen.”
