A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Oct. 6-12:
Last year on Oct. 6, 2023: Cleveland skipper Terry “Tito” Francona retired this week after 23 years of managing in MLB. Francona was born April 22, 1959, in Aberdeen to former Tito and Roberta (Jackson) Francona. His teams won two World Series in 2004 and 2007 with Boston and went 1,950-1,672 (13th most wins all-time among MLB managers) with 11 postseason appearances. He managed the Phillies for four seasons, the Red Sox for eight seasons, and the Guardians for 11 seasons. Francona’s dad Tito Sr. (1933-2018) played for the Aberdeen Pheasants while his mom Roberta (“Birdie” Jackson) was an Aberdeen native and an Aberdeen Central graduate.
10 years ago on Oct. 6, 2014: The Yankton football team celebrated a 31-20 homecoming win in Aberdeen during Central’s homecoming week. Central led the game 20-17 at the half in Yankton on Sept. 19 when the game was eventually suspended due to severe weather and moved to Aberdeen. By Oct. 10, Yankton had won three conference games in seven days, outscoring their opponents 81-0 in 10 quarters.
20 years ago on Oct. 9, 2004: The Rapid City Stevens girls’ tennis team of coach Jason Olson won the state title in their home city, the first time Rapid City had hosted that state tourney since 1979.
30 years ago on Oct. 7, 1994: Matt Heiberger’s nine-yard touchdown run in the sixth overtime gave Bridgewater-Mitchell Christian a 40-32 win over host Marion. A 65-yard pass from Aaron Bass to Bill Plastown with less than a minute to play tied the game at 12 for BMC and sent it into its first overtime. It was the eighth longest high school football game nationally with the record being nine overtimes.
40 years ago on Oct. 12, 1984: Tom Seyer scored on a 26-yard touchdown run to give Ipswich a 7-0 win over Sully Buttes. The Chargers got 19 tackles from Chad Lahman.
50 years ago on Oct. 12, 1974: The SDSU football team stunned UND 55-6. UND was the nation’s eighth-ranked team. Earlier this season, the University of North Dakota made quarterback Tony Dungy and his Minnesota Gophers earn a tough 42-30 win (UND led 10-0 and trailed 28-24 in the third quarter). SDSU quarterback Bill Mast threw three touchdowns and ran for a fourth to lead the Jackrabbits. UND didn’t score until late in the fourth quarter.
