Team effort powers Roncalli sweep over Clark-Willow Lake

This was just the kind of bounce back the Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers needed.

After getting swept at Warner on Tuesday, the Cavaliers recorded a sweep of their own over Clark-Willow Lake 25-17, 25-21, and 27-25 in a Northeast Conference volleyball match at Roncalli Gym.

“Huge win. Honestly my heart is still beating 1,000 miles per hour,” said Cavalier head coach Leesa Ware. “It was a huge win for us and I’m super proud of the girls.”

Roncalli players knew that something needed to change after getting swept their last match and they came together as a team and found a way to win.

“We kind of just regrouped at practice on Wednesday and said ‘Alright. That was our last loss. Like we need to go out hard tomorrow and beat them in three,’” said senior setter Maddie Huber. “We need to keep winning. We need to keep pushing forward.”

And they did just that with a full team effort. Huber was able to set the ball to any hitter which allowed Roncalli to be more efficient offensively not allowing the Cyclone defenders to know where the attack was coming from.

“Something that I tried to do today was that I tried to mix up all of my hitters. Get everyone the ball as much as I could,” said Huber. “I think that’s why we succeeded so much, because we kept their blockers on their toes, because we had everyone killing it.”

The Cavaliers recorded 49 kills on the night from six different players, received blocks from four different members, and collected 71 team digs.

“I just told them in the locker room that I had no idea who we’re going to put on the stat sheets tonight, because honestly, every single one of them deserves to be on there,” said Ware. “It was an all-around team effort. And I’m super proud of these girls.”

After the first set, Huber was leading the stat sheet with five kills. As the setter, she found holes in Clark-Willow Lake’s defense off of tips over the net. When asked if that had ever happened in her career she replied, “First time.”

“She only took advantage of it, and that’s exactly what you want to see,” Ware said. “Sooner or later Maddie they’re going to catch on, and sooner or later they did catch on.”

The Cyclone defense made the adjustment going into sets two and three to not allow easy tips from Huber.

“It was to take away what was working for them,” said Clark-Willow Lake head coach Betty McGraw. “So we did make the adjustment to change our coverage a little bit to ensure that they weren’t able to get that many points on us just from a simple tip.”

The Cyclones fought back with a closely contested second set, and even forced an extra point third set after being down 24-19.

“We just had to refocus in on what we were supposed to be doing and then make some adjustments,” said McGraw. “Just try to power through it and push forward. Keep our motivation up and our determination up.”

The Cyclones had won three straight points to get the game to 24-22 before Ware called a timeout.

“I called a timeout and told them everybody just settle down right now. Now that we have dug ourselves a hole, we have to get out of this hole, but we have to stay aggressive,” Ware said. “We get so amped up that we get out of control and out of system. Once we kind of come out of that, then we’re back in system, being aggressive and we’re kind of executing.”

The Cavaliers battled back in the third set after seeing set point for the only time in the night after an ace from Kadee Frankfurth. The Cyclones had a line violation that would’ve sealed the set win for them, which gave the Cavaliers a shot at closing out the match. Ava Hanson finished the set with back-to-back kills to close out the night for Roncalli.

“This was an off night. That happens, that’s allowed. So we’re just going to go back and keep pushing forward, and keep doing what we have been doing,” McGraw said. “We found a lot of success already this season, so we’re just going to go back. We’re going to keep at it and keep practicing.”
