A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Nov. 24-30:

Last year on Nov. 25, 2023: The 115 th Apple Cup with a South Dakota flavor didn’t disappoint as No. 4 Washington (12-0) nipped rival Washington State 24-21 on Grady Gross’ 42-yard field as time expired. Washington is coached by former Milbank and University of Sioux Falls graduate Kalen DeBoer. Washington State coach Jake Dickert is a former assistant coach at SDSU, USD and Augustana. Other assistant coaches in the game have coaching experience in South Dakota as well.

10 years ago on Nov. 26, 2014: New York Giants rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. became a national sensation on Sunday Night Football with an amazing one-handed TD catch against Dallas. His mother is Heather Van Norman, a former Minnesota high school sprinter who performed so well in Sioux Falls that she is a member of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays Hall of Fame.

20 years ago on Nov. 27, 2004: The NSU women’s basketball team defeated Upper Iowa 96-60 by getting out to a 29-2 lead. The Wolves shot 58 percent from the field with six double-figure scorers led by Noelle Hall with 14.

30 years ago on Nov. 29, 1994: Some future NFL stars were named to the All-North Central Conference football team, including Adam Timmerman and Adam Vinatieri of SDSU and Bryan Schwartz of Augustana. Also earning two all-conference honors on this day for her play on the volleyball court and in the classroom was Diane Klein of Augustana. Schwartz and Klein were married the following month.

40 years ago on Nov. 27, 1984: In a low scoring game in Huron, the NSU men’s basketball team never trailed in its 56-46 win over The Tribe. Scott Deadrick and Gene Lorenz combined for 27 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolves.

50 years ago on Nov. 30, 1974: The college football career of Jefferson native Dan LaFleur came to an end when he broke his ankle during Iowa’s finale against Michigan State. The linebacker led the Hawkeyes in tackles the last two seasons with 242 tackles in his final two years.
