HILO, Hawaii – Northern State didn’t let homecourt come into play Friday night.

The Wolves women’s basketball team traveled across the country and took down host Hawaii Hilo 72-47 in non-conference action during the Big Island Holiday Classic.

The Wolves dominated life in the paint with 44 points, and received a major contribution from the bench with 19 points to help fuel the victory.

Northern bolted out to a 16-9 lead in the opening quarter and played with a lead from there. The Wolves evenutally built a 34-15 advantage in the second period before the hosts responded with the final five points of the half for a 34-20 score at intermission.

Madelyn Bragg scored 13 points in the opening half to help stake the Wolves to the lead.

Hilo quickly cut the margin down to a dozen to start the third period before Northern extended the lead to 50-28 with 2:29 left in the quarter.

The host team had one last run left in the fourth quarter, slicing the margin down to 57-45 with 6:16 remaining. However, the Wolves outscored Hilo 15-2 the remainder of the contest for the final margin of difference.

Bragg led NSU with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Decontee Smith came off the bench to contribute 14 points.

Michaela Jewett and Rianna Fillipi finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively, and each added four assists for Northern.

The Wolves, 4-2 on the season, finish up their Hawaii trip by facing a potent California State Dominguez Hills squad this evening at 5 p.m. Dominguez Hills is 7-0 on the season and coming off a 95-50 win over Western Oregon on Friday.
