Fall sports for Northern State Athletics are coming to an end, with winter sports beginning to get into the swing of things.
The football team concluded its season with a late defensive stand to hold off Wayne State 28-21 last weekend. The Wildcats scored on the first possession of the game.
The Wolves bounced back with a 1-yard Hank Kraft touchdown run with 13:10 left in the half.
The following drive, Wayne regained the lead on a 3-yard run, and it wasn’t late in the first half when Daniel Britt found Cade Kaiser for his first collegiate touchdown to tie the game at 14-14 going into halftime.
It was all Northern in the third quarter as Kraft found the end zone for the second time, and Colton Hackel leaped over the pile to extend the lead to 28-14. Wayne State made it a one-score game as Akeen Knox scored his second touchdown of the day, an 18-yard run.
Wayne eventually had the ball at their own 39-yard line with 1:50 left in the game and no timeouts for its final possession. The Wildcats marched down to the NSU 7-yard line and had time for one final snap as time ran out, which resulted in an incomplete pass broken up by Kegan Mountain.
Britt went 11-16 for 144 yards passing, while rushing for 44 yards, and catching a pass from Jacob Van Landingham for 12 yards. Kraft was the leading rusher on the day with 17 carries for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Jack Oedekoven was the leading receiver with two catches for 65 yards.
Defensively, Jake Adams led the day with 12 tackles, followed by Mountain and Logan Grossinger with 10 each. Mountain also collected his fifth interception of the year, and Luke Gunderson recorded his second interception of the year.
