The Northern State Women’s Basketball team spent its Thanksgiving break in Hawaii, while the rest of the Northern squads stayed in the Midwest.

The Wolves split their games in Hawaii. Last Friday, they defeated the University of Hawaii at Hilo 72-47. Madelyn Bragg recorded her second double-double in a row with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Michaela Jewett had 11 points and rebounds, and Decontee Smith came off the bench for 14 points.

Last Saturday the Wolves faced 18th-rated Cal State Dominguez Hills. In a game where the Wolves had  25 turnovers, and only three points in the fourh quarter, they dropped that contest 60-43. Going into the fourth quarter, NSU trailed by just five points, but shot just 1-for-10 from the field held to prevent a late-stage comeback. Smith was the leading scorer for the Wolves with 10 points, and Jewett finished with 10 rebounds.

The men’s basketball team opened up Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play at home last week against Mary. A slow first half and trailing 45-28 at the break made a steep uphill climb for the Wolves in the second half, which fell short by four points. The Wolves outscored the Marauders 44-31 in the second half.

Devon Brooke and Kaleb Mitchell were the leading scorers with 16 and 14 points respectively. Mitchell also hauled down nine rebounds. James Glenn led the Wolves in assists with eight, while also collecting 12 points and 4 rebounds.

The volleyball team fell short of making the NCAA Division II National Tournament after dropping its semifinal match to second-ranked St. Cloud State in three sets. Wolves’ Libero, Abby Meister was named to the D2CCA Volleyball Central Region Second Team.

Coming up tonight both men’s and women’s basketball teams will travel to MSU Moorhead to take on the Dragons with the women tipping off at 5:30, and the men at 7:30.

Also this evening, Wolves wrestling will kick off conference action hosting MSU Moorhead, at 7. On Saturday, the squad will travel to Moorhead for the Dragon open.

In other events on Saturday, the track and field team will start its season with the Mike Thorson Open in Bismarck, N.D. The swim and dive team will also be in Bismarck to take on Mary and Concordia-St. Paul.
