Central boys blank Mitchell in home opener

As Aberdeen Central was dominating Mitchell, there wasn’t much drama in Golden Eagles Arena Monday afternoon until the final period of the final match.

That’s when Joran Foss gained a measure of revenge on an opponent to cap off a 72-0 Eastern South Dakota Conference boys’ wrestling dual victory.

With the match tied 1-1 entering the final period, Foss gained an escape in the first two seconds to grab a 2-1 lead over Rocky Clark.

“On the bottom you’ve got to be quick,” Foss said, “because if they lay on you it’s hard to move up.”

The match remained tight until Foss scored a takedown with 27 seconds left that sent his teammates flying off the bench in jubilation.

“I knew he was throwing a headlock, so just leaned back and don’t get thrown,” Foss said. “If you do get thrown, just roll through.”

The verdict avenged a loss to Clark the opening weekend of the season.

When asked what the difference was this time around, Foss responded, “Not getting caught. He double-legged me last time and I just went to my back. It was third period, just like this match went to. I’d say my gas tank beat him. I have a better gas tank than a lot of the other heavyweights, so I’ve got to use that to my advantage.”

The victory was a fitting finish to a near perfect day that saw the Golden Eagles rack up six pins, a technical fall, and a major decision on the way to the lopsided team win.

“We went out and took care of business the way we wanted to and the way we intended to,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden, “and we’re hoping we can just kind of use this as momentum heading into Thursday and Friday (at a tournament in Fargo).”

The Golden Eagles received pins from Jude Sumner, Porter Lozenski, Ridley Waldo, Owen Ward, Elias Biegler, and Ryker Meister on the day as one Central wrestler after another went out and picked up a win.

“They ask that of one another. They expect it out of one another,” Bowden said. “When you’re going to be in this lineup, you’re expected to go out there and you’re going to compete, and you’re going to compete to the best of your ability.”

The depth and flexibility showed against the Kernels as Central switched up its lineup a bit in the lower weights when Esten Foss moved up a weight class.

“I didn’t know I was going to go out at 120. I’m a 113 guy and I didn’t know I was going to go up until right before,” Foss said. “Even so, I didn’t really care that much. I just wanted to go out and get the win.”

Foss said that’s the impressive thing about this year’s squad. Each person is willing to do whatever is best for the team.

“I love being on this team, because even if we have guys that have to move up or go down, no one complains about it,” Foss said. “Everyone just accepts it and they go out there and give a fight. … I like how we’re able to move up and down the lineups with different guys. It doesn’t really matter what combination we use, we always come out with a victory.”

Interestingly enough, the Foss brothers are at opposite ends of the lineup and don’t resemble each other much. Joran, a senior, wrestles at 285 pounds, while Esten, a junior, is usually at 113.

“We’re like polar opposites, almost,” Joran said. “Just a year and a half apart.”

When asked if they ever wrestle at home, Esten said, “No. I know I wouldn’t come out on top there, so I tend to stay away from that.”

So he doesn’t give his brother a hard time once in a while?

“Oh, I still do,” Esten said, “but he just gets mad and I walk away.”

The Golden Eagles will now head to the Rumble on the Red in Fargo for two days of action.

“We’re far from perfect,” Bowden said following his team’s win over Mitchell. “We’ve got a long way to go, but this was a step in the right direction, and we’re hoping we can take another step on Thursday, Friday.”
