Fast start fuels Cougars to girls’ win over Mitchell

There were no last-minute heroics needed this time.

After securing a win over Mitchell in the final minute on Saturday, the Aberdeen Cougars blitzed the Marlins with four goals in the opening period on the way to a 5-1 girls’ hockey win Sunday morning at the Odde Ice Center.

“I think we wanted to come out with a bang today,” said Aberdeen’s Alyssa Roehrich, “kind of get it started early, get the energy and momentum going.”

Lessons learned on Saturday translated into the quick getaway on Sunday, according to Cougars coach David Sandvig.

“I think that’s what made the difference in our scoring early,” Sandvig said, “it was just emphasizing some of the stuff that we said would help get pucks in the net.”

Interestingly enough, the Cougars had a much larger difference in shots on goal in a narrow win than they did in Sunday’s lopsided victory.

“I just think today we got better shots off. We took better looks,” said Roehrich who finished with a pair of goals. “We were getting it around in the zone and getting good looks.”

Roehrich credit her teammates for her dual goals in the victory.

“A lot of it was my teammates passing it to me, good looks, good work, good puck movement,” Roehrich said. “It took all of us for sure.”

Rachel Siefken got the Cougars going with the first goal of the contest. The junior always seems to be around the puck.

“It’s all about mindset. I like to dictate the game,” Siefken said. “I like to dictate how it goes, so I really like to be in the play at all times.”

Siefken does not always look to score. She often looks for open teammates and takes joy in helping them to score.

“I like to think of it as being selfless. Getting goals is good, but assists matter just as much,” Siefken said. “You want to be an all-around good player. … I’m not always open for a shot, so I look towards the open player.”

On Sunday, Siefken also played a key role on defense, helping Aberdeen to kill off some power plays to keep the Marlins at bay.

“She had a good day, especially even on the penalty kills.” Sandvig said. “She was pesky out there. She’s always getting a stick on a puck. She’s got really good hockey sense.”

Addyson Keller, who scored the game-winner on Saturday, had a pair of first-period goals for Aberdeen.

The Cougars, now 3-0 in league play, head to Fargo, N.D. this weekend for another contest.

They will head there with momentum from a home sweep of league games this past weekend.

“We’re happy with it,” Sandvig said. “A lot of things to take away from it.”
