Aberdeen Central made quick work of its foe during a girls’ wrestling dual at Golden Eagles Arena on Monday afternoon.

Of the six contested matches, the Golden Eagles won four by pin and another by technical fall on the way to a 53-12 Eastern South Dakota Conference win over Mitchell.

“They saw what they wanted, and they went and took it. They didn’t really wait,” said Central coach Jake Flakus. “They just went out and tried to get their girl on the back, and it worked most of the time.”

From a first-year wrestler to an experienced senior, the Golden Eagles went out aggressively and pinned their foes in short order.

“It’s very contagious in wrestling,” Flakus said. “One girl gets a pin, they get it rolling, and it just keeps rolling.”

Senior Ula Martin got that ball rolling with a pin in the opening period of her match at 114 pounds.

“I was actually really excited for today for Mitchell,” Martin said. “I was a little bit nervous, because matches are always 50-50 no matter who starts out. That’s how I view wrestling always.”

Martin said she has mixed emotions for her final year of competition with the Golden Eagles.

“It feels a little bit more sad. I only feel sad, because I’m leaving the team,” Martin said, “but I do feel more pumped at the same time, knowing that, watching all these girls grow and seeing all these new girls coming to the team is actually really good.”

One of those new girls is freshman Jocelynn Rose, who picked up a pin right after Martin’s match against the Kernels.

Rose said she decided to go out for wrestling for a couple of reasons.

“I thought it looked super fun,” she said, “and my friends were doing it.”

When asked about the most challenging aspect of the sport, Rose quickly responded, “the conditioning.”

Rose looked right at home on the mat, using a variety of moves en route to the win by fall.

She said older girls, like Avery Bendewald, have helped her out in the wrestling room.

“My practice partner, Avery, she teaches me a lot,” Rose said.

Flakus said there are several leaders on the squad that have helped to groom the younger members of the team.

“I think some of the young new girls take after the couple older girls, and they really listen and pay attention to what they do,” Flakus said, “so that definitely helps the younger ones kind of figure out the ropes.”

Central also received pins on the day from Jasmine Maas and Rakyrah Wallace, and a technical fall from Madison Little.

Martin said the Golden Eagles are a tight-knit team, regardless of what happens out on the mat.

“It doesn’t matter if you don’t get a pin or if you lose,” she said, “we’re all here together and we will all support each other no matter.”

Central is headed to Fargo, N.D. to compete in the Rumble on the Red Friday and Saturday.
