BRITTON – Aberdeen Central used a balanced effort to capture the team championship at the Britton-Hecla Triangular gymnastics meet on Monday.

The Golden Eagles finished with a total of 133.450 points. Britton-Hecla was second and Sisseton third.

“We have not practiced for 10 days. … We were not sure how the girls would look tonight,” said Central coach Mickey Everson. “But honestly it went well.”

Sisseton’s Izzy Metz took the all-around after winning the vault and beam. Maddy Walberg of Central who won the floor was second in all-around, and Britton-Hecla’s Abigail Lee, who won the bars, was third in all-around.

“We had a few more skills we threw out today and they paid off, but we as a coaching staff always start analyzing and planning all the things we need to add or change,” Everson said. “We always need work on beam and staying on it. For some reason we just have not been very solid in meets in that aspect.”

The Golden Eagles had a strong effort on floor, taking the top three spots with Walberg first followed by Brecken Santjer in second and Addison Everson in third. Central also received a runner-up finish from Regan Lust on the beam.

The Golden Eagles will now take a break to work on a few things in practice to gear up for the post-holiday schedule of the season.

“We have a good four days of practice now without a competition as we roll into January, so we already have plans for what we can accomplish in that time,” Coach Everson said. “We are very happy with where we are falling score-wise, but see so many areas we can get higher.”

That will be the focus as the squad heads into the new year.

“We will focus on connections and event requirements to boost to 135,” Everson said. “That is our January New Year’s goal.”
