Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Dec. 8-14:

Last year on Dec. 9, 2023: Madelyn Bragg and Rianna Fillipi combined for 39 points to push NSU past Bemidji 81-61. The Wolves improved to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference. It is the best start of the women’s basketball season for NSU since the Wolves started 9-1 in 2017.

10 years ago on Dec. 13, 2014: In a two-day, 31-team tourney featuring reigning wrestling team state champions from three states, Aberdeen Central won the Rapid City Invitational. The Golden Eagles were led by champions John Frisco and Sam Schaunaman, who went undefeated after three straight days of wrestling in the Black Hills (Central won two duals on Dec. 11).

20 years ago on Dec. 8, 2004: Rapid City Stevens graduate Jordan Lintz Cherebetiu earned her LPGA card for the 2005 season. She was the State AA runner-up in 1995 and 1996 and won three tourneys during her career at the University of Wyoming, including the 2000 Mountain West Championship. From 1995 to 1999, she won five SDGA championships, including the prestigious women’s stroke play tourney in 1997 and 1998. She played on the Futures Tour for three years with mixed results. She almost quit chasing her dream as she took time off from August 2003 to January 2004 and married Sorin Cherebetiu, a teaching pro from Florida.

30 years ago on Dec. 10, 1994: In last week’s Class B girls’ basketball championship game on Dec. 3, Wakonda defeated Tripp-Delmont 78-60. Wakonda had five double-figure scorers, including Megan Beatty, Lana Christensen and Miranda Moser. All three were members of Wakonda’s last title team in 1990 — as sixth-grade student managers.

40 years ago on Dec. 8, 1984: Renae Sallquist and Lisa Kurtenbach combined for 39 points to pace Brookings over Sioux Falls Lincoln for the State A girls’ basketball title. In the third-place game, Aberdeen Central defeated Sturgis 60-37 behind Jennifer Stanford’s 26 points.

50 years ago on Dec. 14, 1974: Bill Christensen scored 34 points as his Northern Wolves bounced Sioux Falls College 94-72. Christensen went 17 of 23 from the field with zero free throws attempted.
