A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Dec. 15-21:

Last year on Dec. 21, 2023: Sully Buttes High School held a dedication ceremony to rename its high school basketball court in honor of Mark Senftner. He died on Oct. 15, 2022, of brain cancer at the age of 60. The McLaughlin and NSU graduate was a long-time teacher and coach at Roscoe, Gregory, Timber Lake and Sully Buttes (from 2005 until the time of his death). His Sully Buttes football teams won more than 100 games and were state runners-up in 2015, 2017 and 2018 while his girls’ basketball Charger teams won four state titles (2007, 2008, 2016 and 2017) and two state runner-up finishes (2012 and 2015). His basketball career record was 481-190 and football record was 101-42.

The game was moved to an intramural court inside Frost Arena and the Jacks sailed to a 83-47 victory.

50 years ago on Dec. 21, 1974: The Mount Marty men’s basketball team had one of the most brutal January road trips in the history of South Dakota college hoops: 25 days, 13 games, 12 losses, 11 states and 3,278 miles traveled.
