The Northern State Track and Field team opened its season with six first place finishes at the Mike Thorson Open at the University Mary in Bismarck, N.D.

The Wolves took first in both the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay. The men’s team consisted of Drew Salfrank, Carter Dingman, Damon Roggenbuck, and Drew Henrikson, and the women’s team featured Elisabet Osk Jonsdottir, Emma Hunt, Anna Skachenko, and Kyanna Collymore. The third win of the day came from Lincoln Woodring in the 800m.

The Wolves also took home gold in three field events, with Jeff Boschee winning the high jump, Sam Tremelling capturing the pole vault, and Jayden Munroe topping the field in the triple jump.

Wolves wrestling also won their first conference dual last Thursday against Minnesota State Moorhead. The Dragons jumped out to an early 9-0 lead winning the first three matches of the night. Tyson Lien got the Wolves on the board with an overtime win, which was followed up by a Nathan Schauer pin to tie the dual at 9-9.

The Wolves lost the next two matches and needed to win the final three of the night to take their first conference win. Braydon Mogle got the first win by decision, followed by a tech fall win by Wyatt Turnquist. Griffin Lundeen stepped onto the mat for the deciding match of the night. After getting taken down in the first period, Lundeen answered back in the second and third with eight total tilt points, giving the Wolves the final push over the Dragons.

The Wolves wrestling team then traveled up to Moorhead to compete in the Dragon open on Saturday. Turnquist won the tournament at 149, Karsyn Lhotak took first in the white bracket, and Grady Fey was the runner up in the white bracket as well.

Last Thursday night, both basketball squads fell to Minnesota State Moorhead. The women fell in overtime 73-70, despite having three opportunities in one possession in the final minute of regulation. Michaela Jewett and Morgan Fielder ended the game as the leading scorers for the Wolves with 15 points apiece, followed by Madelyn Bragg with 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Decontee Smith with 10 points.

The men fell to the 8th-ranked Dragons 80-50. The Wolves only shot 16.7% from three, and 50% from the free throw line. Marcus Burks and Ethan Russell were the leading scorers putting up 11 points each, followed by Kaleb Mitchell who had nine coming off the bench.

The swim & dive team fell to Concordia-St. Paul and Mary last weekend. There were seven top-10 finishes for the Wolves, with Jacie Flockhart taking second place in the 1m dive.

Coming up this weekend in Northern Athletics, the track and field team will compete at home against South Dakota Mines on Friday and Saturday. Both basketball squads will be on the road as they take on Bemidji State on Friday with the women tipping off at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:30 p.m., and St. Cloud State on Saturday with the women starting at 3:30 p.m. and the men at 5:30 p.m. The men will also host Jamestown on Monday night in Wachs Arena starting at 7 p.m. Wolves wrestling will compete in the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis on Saturday and Sunday before taking the rest of the month off.
