Central boys claim road win over Pierre

PIERRE – Aberdeen Central motored its way through a dominant victory over the defending state runner-up Thursday night as the Golden Eagles racked up 10 bonus-point victories en route to a 53-16 boys’ wrestling road win over Pierre.

While Central did take a dual victory over Pierre at last season’s state duals tournament, regular season wins over the Governors have not been commonplace for the Golden Eagles.

“It’s been few and far between,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden.

Until Thursday.

The Golden Eagles began Thursday’s dual with a technical fall by Owen Ward at 150 pounds and never let up. Bowden noted that his squad wasn’t so much focused on who it was wrestling as much as it was focused on winning.

“It didn’t really matter if they were wearing green or where they were from,” Bowden said, “we were ready to compete.”

After Ward’s opening victory, the Golden Eagles rattled off six more bonus point wins. Mason Schrempp (157) followed with another technical fall, then Elias Biegler (165) and Grayden Timm (175) put up major decisions. Cole Dunlavy pinned his opponent at 190 pounds, Ryker Meister (215) added another major decision and Joran Foss (285) pinned his man in the second period.

All before the Governors got on the board.

“These guys, once they get rolling on you, they’re tough to stop,” Bowden said. “They’re hard to get down.”

Bowden said he also saw something a little extra from his squad in the win.

“There was quite a few of them that went out there and kind of motored through their kid,” he said, “but there was some other ones that they were working through their match and they’d hit a sticky point like in that third period where their mind was telling them, ‘hey, man, let’s be comfortable and let off the throttle a little bit.’ They just found another gear and they went out and found a bonus point for us. Going out there and doing things like that against a quality opponent, that’s what really makes you jump levels.”

Esten Foss (113), Will Allen (126), Brody Aesoph (138) and Ridley Waldo (144) finished off the dual with wins for the Golden Eagles. Esten Foss and Aesoph earned pins in their matches, while Waldo ended the night with a major decision.

Central will switch to a tournament setting on Saturday at Brandon Valley.

“First time there,” Bowden said. “There will be 12 teams there, so it’s a smaller tournament, but still some quality opponents.”
