Central boys pick up pair of home dual victories

The duals were completely opposite, but the end result was exactly the same for Aberdeen Central Thursday night.

The Golden Eagles secured a pair of Eastern South Dakota Conference boys’ wrestling dual wins with a 83-0 decision over Yankton and a 40-29 victory over Brandon Valley at Golden Eagles Arena.

Central coach Donnie Bowden expected a tight dual against Brandon Valley.

“This is kind of what we knew was going to happen. We expected it,” Bowden said. “They’re a quality team and they have been for years. They’ve got a lot of quality kids.”

The Golden Eagles fell just one point short of the highest possible point total against the Bucks.

“We left one point out there,” Bowden said. “That’s pretty tough to do no matter who you wrestle. It was a team effort.”

Central received two pins each from Grayden Timm, Cole Dunlavy, Joran Foss, Jackson Dargatz, and Esten Foss.

Dunlavy went out to take care of business in his matches.

“I think it was pretty good, just kind of go out there and get it done,” Dunlavy. “(Coach Bowden) was expecting me to get six points each and that’s what I went out there and did.”

Dunlavy said wrestling at home is different than competing on the road.

“It’s different. You’ve got a little more people watching, especially people you know, so it puts a little bit more on your back,” Dunlavy said. “A little more pressure, but it feels good. It’s exciting.”

Dunlavy is gearing up for the final stretch run of the season coming up. The sophomore said there is still plenty to work on.

“It’s been challenging. There’s a lot stuff to learn, a lot of stuff to go over,” Dunlavy said. “I’m nowhere close to being done with my learning. There’s still things to perfect.”

Dargatz, just an eighth-grader, continues to excel during his first year on the varsity.

He described what it’s like competing at a higher level this season.

“It’s more work, just moving at a quicker pace,” Dargatz said, “having to get better technique, better skills.”

When was asked he if was intimidated facing older opponents, Dargatz responded, “Not really, because I have a lot of belief in myself when I go out on the mat, and I believe that I can win every single match.”

Dargatz has benefitted from having teammate Esten Foss to work with in the wrestling room.

“He has a really high pace in practice,” Dargatz said, “so it gets a little tiring at the end. … He’s been a really good practice partner.”

The Golden Eagles are right back in action on Saturday at a dual tournament in Harrisburg.

“We’re undefeated in duals,” Bowden said, “and we get another five duals this weekend.”
