BRANDON – Aberdeen Central advanced 10 wrestlers to the finals, winning three championships, on the way to winning the team title at the Dan Pansch Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles finished with 293 points.
“It was good team effort,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “Everyone placed today that we entered so that was good.”
The tournament had 11 teams, much smaller than some of the other events that Central has wrestled in, but still featured quality competition.
“It was kind of a nice size,” Bowden said. “There were still some really quality kids at some weights.”
The Golden Eagles received individual championships from Jackson Dargatz, Esten Foss, and Mason Schrempp.
Dargatz, an eighth-grader, continues to have a solid season.
“The kid just keeps getting better and better,” Bowden said.
Foss capped off his day with a pin in :46 seconds in the championship.
“He was very dominant all day long,” Bowden said. “He had a very quick pin in the finals.”
Schrempp won his championship by technical fall.
“I think this is the first tournament he’s won this year, so that was good,” Bowden said. “He beat the kid that he wrestled for third and fourth last year in the state meet.”
Finishing runner-up for the Golden Eagles were Will Allen, Elias Biegler, Cole Dunlavy, Joran Foss, Jude Sumner, Ridley Waldo, and Owen Ward.
Bowden said it was beneficial seeing different competition at the event.
“There was a good mix of teams from down here that we don’t see very often,” he said. “That’s why we wanted to come.”
Central hosts a triangular on Thursday at Golden Eagles Arena. Central faces Yankton at 5 p.m., followed by Brandon vs. Yankton, and then Central against Brandon Valley.
Bowden said each Eastern South Dakota Conference dual is important when trying to win a conference title.
“We have to be able to get through them,” Bowden said. “We have a hiccup there and it kind of closes the door on what you’re going to get done.”
It was a productive week for the Golden Eagles who won duals over Huron and Pierre, and then the tourney title on Saturday.
“It was a pretty decent end to a quality week,” Bowden said. “We got a little better today and we came out healthy. We’ll just see what this next week brings us.”
