YANKTON – With a Yankton defense focused on stopping Aberdeen Central’s potent inside attack, the Golden Eagles turned to their outside shooters to fuel a girls’ basketball win on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles made eight 3-pointers on the way to a 66-39 Eastern South Dakota Conference girls’ basketball win over Yankton.
“Any road win is a good win. Our guards shot the ball really well in the second half,” said Central coach Paiton Burckhard. “Yankton played us differently than teams have so far this year. Triple-teamed our bigs and our guards took advantage of that and knocked down shots which allowed us to build a lead and maintain it.”
Emma Dohrer knocked down four 3-pointers on the way to a team-high 18 points for the Golden Eagles.
“Emma played awesome and shot the ball well,” Burckhard said. “Good things happen when she is on the floor.”
Central still received a combined 29 points from their inside players as Taryn Hermansen finished with 15, and Lauryn Burckhard followed with 14.
The contest was tight for the first half with Central clinging to a 33-26 advantage. However, the Golden Eagles outscored the hosts 33-13 in the second half to win the game going away.
Central, 4-1 on the season, travels for a game at Sioux Falls Lincoln on Friday.
