HURON – The Aberdeen Central gymnastics squad wrapped up its regular-season competition slate with a second-place finish at the Huron Triangular Thursday evening. The Golden Eagles notched 135.8 points behind Watertown’s 145.2. Huron was third with 131.9.

Central coach Mickey Everson said the weight of the season finally caught up to her squad.

“A lot of emotion and mental strength goes into this sport and sometimes it catches up with (the girls) for a moment,” Everson said. “But they stayed strong and gave it their all, every one of them.”

Despite competing without two members of its regular rotation due to illness, the Golden Eagles still managed to forge ahead in terms of skill development.

“We tried a lot of new things and many of them paid off,” Everson said. “There were a few mishaps in some areas. So now we just have to put it all together and have the potential to score really well.”

Maddy Wahlberg finished fourth in the all-around competition, while Alexis Bomesberger was seventh. Wahlberg’s finish was fueled by a second-place showing in the vault, a fourth place on the balance beam and a fifth on the uneven bars.

Bomesberger was just behind Wahlberg in the vault, finishing third. Regan Lust and Addison Everson tied for fourth.

Central will have little time to switch its attention to the postseason, as it head to the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet on Saturday in Yankton.

“We just need to stay healthy for two more weeks,” Everson said. “(Friday) we are doing a recovery stretch and heading to Yankton right away for ESD.”

Team scores: 1, Watertown, 145.2; 2, Aberdeen Central 135.8; 3, Huron, 131.9.
