This one featured just about everything you could want in a high school basketball game.

A cross-town matchup, a packed gym, an overtime finish and plenty of atmosphere.

Aberdeen Christian rallied late in regulation and then took control in overtime to claim a 72-60 non-conference boys’ basketball win over Aberdeen Roncalli inside an electric Roncalli Gym.

“It’s not fun for us on the losing end, but I thought basketball won today,” said Roncalli coach Dan Gallagher. “It was a great atmosphere.”

In a game that featured little separation the entire night, it was Christian that found the crucial surge it needed, scoring 14 unanswered points to eventually take control.

Trailing 56-50 with three minutes left in regulation, the Knights started a pivotal run that eventually tied the score thanks in part to four straight free throws from Dylan Hofer.

Once in overtime, Christian continued its momentum with back-to-back and-ones from Grady Jett and Brooks Jett, before Grady Jett capped the 14-0 run with another basket for a 64-56 advantage.

After a Roncalli basket close it two six points, it was Ellis Russell who provided the dagger with four points in less than 10 seconds to put the contest out of reach.

“The first one, we were kind of set up in the offense and the shot clock was getting low so I just took it to the rim, got one there,” Russell said, “and they got it inbounded quick, and I just jumped the pass and got an easy layup again.”

The contest definitely featured a postseason feel as the two teams, who share a football cooperative, did their best to come out on top in the friendly rivalry.

“We knew that Roncalli was a quality team. Going to overtime definitely isn’t a surprise,” said Christian coach Matt Rohrbach. “There’s so much energy in the gym, excitement, and obviously you’re playing for kind of the pride of Aberdeen a little bit in some ways. Just really proud of the guys for stepping up and wanting that moment.”

While it marked the first game in the Christian-Roncalli series for Sam Franks, who transferred in from Aberdeen Central this fall, it still provided a memorable atmosphere for the Roncalli senior.

“There were a lot of Central guys here, I had a lot of family here and the whole gym was packed,” Franks said. “It was loud. I think we did a really good job feeding off the intensity and the crowd.”

And while Franks was not a member of the football team that featured some of the Christian guys, he still definitely knows a bunch of them.

“It really is a unique situation, these guys obviously live in town, so I play most of them at the YMCA,” Franks said. “I know a lot of their skills, but they also know mine, so that’s a big challenge for me.”

Christian’s biggest lead in regulation was 46-41 late in the third quarter, while Roncalli’s was the six-point advantage it held just briefly in the fourth quarter.

Brooks Jett finished with 25 points and 13 rebounds to lead a balanced Christian attack, that saw the Knights receive at least six points from six different players.

“If tonight wasn’t a focal of you need to have more than five guys, six guys, seven guys, eight guys, I don’t really know what is, because that’s what it took for us to win the basketball game,” Rohrbach said. “Everybody, whether they were a starter or a bench player coming in, and making sure that they’re doing their job.”

Luke Kaiser added 14 points for the Knights, and Hofer followed with 10.

Russell had his usual steady floor game, spotting open teammates for uncontested layups in the middle of Roncalli’s zone defense on multiple occasions.

“It’s real easy at the top of the key, to just really survey the court a lot, especially when they’re in that zone, I like to look for obviously the gaps,” Russell said. “They were kind of stretched out when we were out on the perimeter, so it made it easy for the big guys to flash in and then it’s just an easy layup.”

Franks led the Cavaliers with 19 points, Cam Olson added 13, and Aiden Fisher contributed 10.

“Both teams played extremely hard. I know our guys, we’ve been preaching 32 minutes of just physicality and non-stop effort,” Gallagher said. “We gave 32 minutes of it. Unfortunately, it just went 36. We could tell we were getting a little tired, but they gave everything they had, that’s for sure.”

Roncalli, 3-4 on the season, plays at Leola-Frederick on Thursday while Christian, 3-1, travels for a road contest against Waverly-South Shore that evening.

Both the Knights and the Cavaliers will remember Tuesday’s meeting for a while.

“It’s always awesome to play here,” Russell said. “My last year was a great game to go out here.”

Franks said his team can build off a contest like that one.

“These are the fun games to play,” Franks said. “These are the games we want to win. These are the games that get us ready for the regional and SoDak 16 games.”
