The Aberdeen Cougars had their nine-game league winning streak snapped in a 3-1 setback to the Brookings Rangers in girls’ hockey action Friday night at the Odde Ice Center.

The visitors scored two goals in the closing minutes to break a 1-1 tie and pick up the victory, despite being outshot 34-17 by the Cougars.

“We outshot and controlled more of the night,” said Aberdeen coach David Sandvig. “We just didn’t get enough done to take it.”

After a scoreless first period, Brookings scored the only goal of the second period.

Olivia Sandvig tied the game for the Cougars on an assist from Alyssa Roehrich in the third period. The scored remained 1-1 for about 10 minutes, before the Rangers scored with 2:18 remaining and then added an insurance goal with 32 seconds left.

It was Aberdeen’s first league loss after winning its first nine.

The same two teams are back in action this afternoon with puck drop set for 1 p.m. at the Odde Ice Center on Greg Swanson Day.
