PIERRE – The Aberdeen Central girls’ wrestling program saw its perfect dual record come to a screeching halt Thursday night, as the Golden Eagles dropped a 64-6 decision to Pierre.
Central, which returned from the holiday break with a pair of dual victories, notched just one match win on Thursday, that coming from Lilly Nelson at 165 pounds. Nelson pinned her opponent, Jayda Steinke, in 42 seconds.
“Obviously, we wished for a better outcome, but nonetheless, we had to strap up and wrestle,” said Central coach Jake Flakus. “There were some good things in matches, and then they just got away from us.”
Flakus said Nelson’s victory came at a good time for the junior
“That was a good win and confidence boost from her, especially since the day we wrestled Mitchell, she was the only one that lost,” he said.
As a team, the Golden Eagles will look to rebound in two days, as they turn their attention back to tournament-style action. Central will wrestle in the Brandon Valley Invitational on Saturday.
“It’ll be a little bit smaller tournament, but still some good wrestlers there,” Flakus said. “A dual on Tuesday and a dual on Thursday isn’t the easiest … but I think we’ll get back to our groove with a tournament. I think that’s where a lot of our girls like to be. They like to get a couple matches in and get in a groove.”
