PIERRE – The Aberdeen Central boys’ wrestling program won three duals before falling in its final match of the day to go 3-1 at the East-West Duals Saturday in Pierre.

The Golden Eagles began the day with a pair of big wins over Rapid City Central (78-0) and Spearfish (77-3). Central then followed with a 43-21 victory over Rapid City Stevens, before falling by the same score (43-21) to Sturgis to complete the day.

“It went well,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “We got to wrestle those teams from out west. Started out with two (wins) in really big fashion. There was a handful of forfeits out there for both teams, but we wrestled what they put out there.”

Central dropped just one match through those two opening duals. The Golden Eagles then won eight of the first 10 matches against Stevens, five in bonus-point fashion.

“We wrestled pretty well in that one,” Bowden said.

Porter Lozenski (132), Owen Ward (150) and Jackson Dargatz 106) all earned technical fall victories in the Stevens match, while Mason Schrempp (157) tallied a major decision. Grayden Timm (175) and Cole Dunlavy (190) won by fall in their matches.

Central then found itself on the flip side of the coin against Sturgis. The Scoopers won seven of the first nine matches, including two pins and a technical fall in the first three matches of the dual.

“They’re a juggernaut of a program,” Bowden said. “But we went in there and battled. We won four matches, and I thought we had a couple more in the balance there that we could win. We’re looking forward to the next time around.”

Ridley Waldo (144), Elias Biegler (157), Ryker Meister (215) and Dargatz (106) each picked up wins. Waldo, Meister and Dargatz won their matches via fall.

The Golden Eagles are home to face Watertown and Harrisburg on Thursday in a pair of Eastern South Dakota Conference duals before hosting the annual Lee Wolf tournament on Saturday.

“Watertown and Harrisburg are two quality teams,” Bowden said. “We dualed Harrisburg a week ago and it was a five-point match. We’re hoping to widen the gap by getting some of our guys healthy and getting them back.”

The Lee Wolf will feature several area programs, along with some out-of-state teams.

“It’s one of the tougher one-day tournaments in the state,” Bowden said. “It’ll be a good couple days for (fans) to come watch.”
