A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Jan. 5-11, 2025:

Last year on Jan. 5, 2024: Lane Tietz of Groton scored 47 points in a win over Clark-Willow Lake. It broke the Groton boys’ basketball school record of 41 points set by Aaron Feser in 1991.

10 years ago on Jan. 10, 2015: Former Aberdeen Wing Zach Nagelvoort was the winning goalie for the Michigan hockey team as the Wolverines defeated Minnesota 7-5 to earn 75-year-old coach Red Berenson earn his 800th career win. Berenson is only the fourth DI hockey coach to accomplish the feat.

20 years ago on Jan. 8, 2005: Matt Hammer had 23 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in NSU’s 81-73 win over Southwest Minnesota State.

30 years ago on Jan. 7, 1995: The NSU women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to 44 games as the Wolves toppled Southwest Minnesota State 75-64 behind Julie Jensen’s 24 points.

40 years ago on Jan. 5, 1985: Clark Jordre scored 16 to pace Selby over Leola 55-43. Keith Retzer scored 16 for Leola.

50 years ago on Jan. 5, 1975: For the second year in a row, South Dakota high schools voted against having football playoffs. The vote was 116-88 in favor of having postseason playoffs, but it takes a two-thirds majority (136) to pass a state high school activities association constitutional amendment. The state football coaches said they will continue trying to get playoffs.
