A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Jan. 12-18, 2025:
Last year on Jan. 12, 2024: Milbank native Kalen DeBoer has been hired as the 28th football coach in the history of the University of Alabama. He will replace legendary Nick Saban, who retired with a 292-71-1 career record and seven national titles. DeBoer won NAIA national championships at the University of Sioux Falls as a player and a coach. DeBoer has a career coaching record of 104-12. A few days ago, DeBoer’s Washington Huskies finished as the national runners-up. He won six national coach of the year awards this past season.
10 years ago on Jan. 15, 2015: Marcus Robinson (19 points), Cody Marzahn (13), Josh Mach (11) and Tyler Wenbourne (10) led the Presentation men’s basketball team to a 79-67 win over Crown College.
20 years ago on Jan. 15, 2005: Doran Eastman scored 24 to pace Tiospa Zina past Crazy Horse 49-44.
30 years ago on Jan. 13, 1995: Former Huron and SDSU standout runner Rod DeHaven is ranked fourth among American men in Runner’s World road race rankings. Meanwhile, the LPGA’s Kris Tschetter of Sioux Falls is featured in Golf Magazine.
40 years ago on Jan. 12, 1985: SDSU erased a four-point deficit in the final seven minutes to beat Augustana 90-83. Mark Schultz (De Smet) and Mark Tetzlaff (Hayti), who grew up 23 miles apart from each other, combined for 51 points and missed only a combined six shots for the Jacks. David Johnson scored 34 for Augie.
50 years ago on Jan. 18, 1975: A balanced offensive attack by Coach Gene Zulk’s SDSU team turned into an 81-72 win over rival USD. The Jacks were led by Brian Shanks (19 points), Mark Graham (19), George Schroeder (17), Ron Wiblemo (13) and Mike Christianson (13). USD got 26 points from Joe Mueting.
