Looking Back

A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Jan. 19-25, 2025:

Last year on Jan. 23, 2024: NSU standout wide receiver Dakota Larson was named a first-team Academic All-American. The Arizona native not only is a three-time all-conference selection, but has a 3.80 grade point average with a major in environmental science. This is the third time Larson has been named as an Academic All-American, and he is the first three-time such honoree in NSU football history.

10 years ago on Jan. 22, 2015: The Webster wrestling team won its 63rd consecutive dual that dated back to six years ago in a unique way. The Bearcats fell behind to Redfield-Doland 24-0 and 30-3, before rallying to tie the score at 36 at the end of the match. The first eight criteria on the sheet were all ties. It finally came down to which team had the most near falls. Webster owned that advantage and thus was awarded the win on the ninth criteria.

20 years ago on Jan. 22, 2005: Sully Buttes moved to 11-0 as the No. 1-rated Chargers defeated Sioux Falls Christian 64-60 in the Hanson Classic. Sully Buttes led by 22 going into the fourth quarter. The winners were led by Blake Yackley (20 points and 10 rebounds) and Jesse Hyde (17 points).

30 years ago on Jan. 21, 1995: The South Dakota Men’s State Bowling Tournament will be held in Huron after all. Huron has two bowling centers with a combined 26 lanes and a minimum of 20 lanes is needed to host the state tourney. One of Huron’s bowling centers closed and is being sold. The owner assured state officials that if the center is not sold and reopened under new ownership, arrangements would be made for the state tourney to proceed in both centers as planned March 11-May 7.

40 years ago on Jan. 19, 1985: Gene Lorenz had 28 points, 18 rebounds and six assists in sparking NSU over Southwest Minnesota State 95-90. Todd Jordre added 24 points and Scott Deadrick 20 for the Wolves.

50 years ago on Jan. 25, 1975: The now 54-year- old Fiesta Bowl in Phoenix started due to a Grafton, N.D., native with South Dakota ties. Known as the father of the Fiesta Bowl, Jack Bell Stewart (Jan. 24, 1904-Feb. 8, 1973) started the bowl in 1971 as chairman of the Greater Phoenix Sports Foundation. Stewart, who became a successful hotel businessman in Phoenix, was a 1921 graduate and a football/baseball standout at Grafton High School and a 1926 graduate of UND. However, he started his college career at SDSU and his brother, Gordon, was a 1930s-40s manager of Ross Lumber Co. in Sioux Falls. In the first Fiesta Bowl in 1971, Arizona State defeated Florida State 45-38. In the fifth annual game in 1975, Arizona State defeated Nebraska 17-14.
