A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Jan. 26-Feb. 1, 2025:

Last year on Jan. 27, 2024: Long-time Aberdeen Central educator and coach Burt Elliott has died at age 76. The Pierre and NSU graduate coached tennis at Central for 35 years. His Golden Eagle boys’ tennis team won state titles in 1972, 1973 and 1974.

10 years ago on Jan. 26, 2015: The Aberdeen Cougars defeated host Brookings 8-3 after falling behind 2-0 and 3-2 at the end of the second period in a matchup of the state league’s top girls’ hockey teams. Of Aberdeen’s six goals in the third period, three came within 57 seconds from Rhiannon Abel, Hailey Gould and Mikayla Santjer.

20 years ago on Jan. 29, 2005: USD graduate and Olympian Derek Miles defeated some of the best pole vaulters in the world at an event on his home turf at the DakotaDome in Vermillion. Miles cleared 19 feet, ½ inch to win the competition in front of 3,253 fans.

30 years ago on Jan. 28, 1995: No. 1 Watertown defeated No. 2 Sioux Falls Roosevelt 59-42 to improve to 12-0. Brian Norberg led the Arrows with 28 points. SFR junior standout John Sivesind missed the game with a sprained ankle.

40 years ago on Jan. 26, 1985: Aberdeen Roncalli (11-1) won 57-51 over third-ranked Aberdeen Central (8-3) behind a combined 50 points from Rich Dix, Steve Scott, Rob Drapeaux and Rich Coughlin. The Golden Eagles got a combined 35 points from Jimmy Johnson and Mike Pietz.

50 years ago on Jan. 28, 1975: The SDSU men’s swimming team improved to 4-0 after dual wins over Nebraska teams Wayne State and Kearney State. The Jacks were led by freshmen Craig Dolan of Aberdeen and Bob Harder of Rapid City, who combined to set five school records.
