Sisseton snaps streak in win over Knights

Facing a rare three-game losing skid, Sisseton took care of the ball and took care of that streak in the process Monday night at the Aberdeen Christian School Gym.

The Redmen bolted out to an early double-digit advantage and grabbed a 75-17 non-conference girls’ basketball win over the Knights.

“We just wanted to make sure that we take care of the ball, and move the ball, and kind of find where we can sync a little bit better, that’s where we’re having a problem,” said Sisseton coach Sara Lincoln. “I think they did that tonight, so hopefully we can just keep it rolling from here.”

To be fair, Sisseton has faced some strong competition in its past three games, including Class AA foe Mitchell in its last game.

The Redmen dominated play in the opening quarter against Christian pitching a 22-0 shutout, setting the tone by getting the ball inside to center Krista Langager, who has committed to play at the University of Sioux Falls next season.

“That’s our goal every game,” Langager said, “pound it inside and when we can’t do it inside, pound it outside.”

The Knights knew what they were facing against Sisseton, a team that has three players 6-feet or taller. Christian coach Andre Cobbs even had his girls practice against the Christian boys’ team to try to prepare for that kind of size.

“It’s tough for the position that we’re in to go up against a Division II basketball player,” Cobbs said. “It’s really tough.”

Sisseton used its height advantage to obtain numerous high-percentage shots, dominate rebounds by a 2-to-1 margin, and block eight shots in the contest.

However, the biggest point of emphasis for the Redmen was valuing the basketball and they had just five turnovers against the Knights.

“Our team is really focused on our turnovers,” said Sisseton senior Tara Nelson. “That’s one of our big things that we needed to improve on tonight, and what we’ve been working a lot on.”

Doing their best to maximize possessions, the Redmen were able to patiently work the ball around and get everyone involved in the offense.

“That’s what they were going to do today,” Lincoln said, “try to focus on limiting our turnovers, taking care of the ball, and making sure everybody touched the ball tonight.”

Meanwhile, the Knights had a difficult time scoring. Jolie Fogarty led the team with 10 points, but was whistled for four fouls in the opening half and sat out the entire third quarter.

“I think I came out too aggressive at the beginning there,” Fogarty said. “I probably shouldn’t have come out that hard.”

With open shots at a premium against the taller Redmen, Fogarty did what she could to try to attack the rim.

“I tried to really get to the basket a lot,” Fogarty said, “because I know some of the girls were having trouble with how tall those girls were.”

Langager finished with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots to lead a balanced Sisseton attack.

“Getting a win tonight felt good,” Langager said. “Our losing streak does not define us and we’re going to come back. We got this.”

Saylor Langager added 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, and Kennedy Hanson contributed 11 points for Sisseton.

The Redmen, who finished third in the last two State A Tournaments, will host Aberdeen Roncalli on Friday. Lincoln is hoping that Monday night helped her team turn a corner.

“I hope that every day we’re just going to get better together. This is a whole different squad than they’ve played with in the last two years, so it’s just taking a little bit to kind of get over that hump,” Lincoln said. “Hopefully, this game kind of helped us get over it a little bit.”

The Redmen, 3-3 on the season, plan on continuing to work hard to keep moving in the right direction.

“We’ve been working on our defense a lot in practice, working hard with each other, pushing each other hard to make our defense better and our offense as well,” Nelson said. “We have to push each other to make ourselves work harder and move faster.”

The Knights, 0-5 on the season, play at Waverly-South Shore on Thursday. They also plan on putting in some work at practice to keep improving as the season goes on.

“They are going to come in and we are going to work hard for the next two days. … They’ve been used to practicing and playing at a specific level,” Cobbs said. “We’ve got to break that habit.”
