Women’s wins highlight I Hate Winter weekend

The Northern State Women’s basketball team defeated 6th-ranked Minnesota State closing out day one of I Hate Winter last weekend.

The Wolves were off to a slow start against the Mavericks as they found themselves trailing 15-2 with 5:09 left in the first quarter, and were down 24-13 at the end of the period. A strong second quarter gave the Wolves a two-point lead going into halftime.

The second half was all Wolves as they handed the Mavericks their first loss in conference 93-82. Michaela Jewett scored a career-high 28 points tacking on 10 rebounds, followed by Riana Fillipi with 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists.

The Wolves closed out I Hate Winter with an 85-73 win over Winona State. Jewett had her second double-double of the weekend with 25 points and 12 rebounds and 6 assists. Madelyn Bragg put up 20 points on the night, with Fillipi putting up a 10/6/6 stat line.

Jewett was named the NSIC player of the week, and Fillipi added another NSIC Shining 5 to her resume. Jewett was also named WBCA/D2CIDA National Player of the week.

The men’s team dropped its two I Hate Winter games to Minnesota State 87-59 and Winona State 74-69. Against the Mavericks, a slow start kept the Wolves fighting an uphill battle all game. Devon Brooke came off the bench and was the leading scorer with 17 points, followed by Caleb Mitchell with 15.

Against the Warriors, the Wolves had a fast start and found themselves up 13-2, but the Warriors hung around and went on a 10-point run to close the half to give them the lead at half, 35-32. The Warriors held a 12-point lead in the second half, and the Wolves were unable to overcome that defici. Kwat Abdelkarim was the leading scorer with 19 points, followed by James Glenn with 16, and Marcus Burks with 14.

While I Hate Winter was taking place on Friday, the Swim and Dive team competed in its last regular season competition against Southwest Minnesota State and Augustana in Marshall, Minn. The Wolves fell to Augustana 214-64 and to Southwest Minnesota State 185-83.

Haley Osbourne took first in the 200 free and Jacie Flockhart broke her own record in the 1m dive with a score of 426.05, which earned her second place.

The NSU Track and Field teams competed at the UMary Winter Classic on Saturday. Chris Weber won the 60m, broke his own school record, and hit the provisional mark putting him 26th in DII. Joel Matehs won the 60m hurdles, and Jonathan Burkhalter won the 1000m, with four other Wolves taking 2nd-5th. Burkhalter also took home gold in the mile with a personal best time. Treyson Schultz won the long jump, and Eli Radtke won the pole vault for the third meet in a row.

On the women’s side, Emaleigh Olesiak took home gold in the 1000m, and the 4x400m team of Elisabet Osk Jonsdottir, Anna Skachenko, Alli Jackson, and Summer Carlson won the race with a season-best time of 4:07.57.

Wolves wrestling was also in action on Saturday against 2nd-ranked Wisconsin-Parkside, dropping its first dual of the year 21-16. The Wolves dropped the first three weight classes, with Braydon Mogle falling to the #1 ranked wrestler 1-0. Wyatt Turnquist secured the first win of the day for the Wolves, and then Mason Fey won his match at 174. Tyson Lien and Nathan Schauer won the last two matches of the day, with Schauer defeating the 7th-ranked heavyweight.

Wolves basketball is back in action tonight hosting Minnesota State Moorhead with the men tipping off at 5:30, followed by the women at 7:30. Both squads will be on the road on Saturday as they take on Minot.

The Track and Field teams will compete at the D2 Open at SDSU on Friday and Saturday. The wrestling team will face off against 11th-ranked UMary Marauders on the road starting at 7 p.m., and be back home on Sunday hosting Southwest Minnesota State at 3 p.m. The swim and dive team will compete at the Coyote Invite on Saturday at USD.
