It could not have been scripted any better.

Senior Ethan Biel went off for a career high in points, tied a school record for 3-pointers in a game, and made the most of Senior Night as Aberdeen Christian outscored Langford Area 83-51 Tuesday night. Biel scored 26 points, 24 coming on eight three-point field goals, during the Lake Region Conference boys’ basketball win at the Christian School Gym.

“That was a quite a game,” Biel said.

Biel’s three-point total tied the school record of current Knights coach Matt Rohrbach set back in 2012.

“He really can shoot the ball,” Rohrbach said. “Eight threes is obviously incredible. … It was awesome just to see him start and be around his fellow senior teammates. It was just great to see him have a ball game like that.”

Biel made five of his first six shots in the opening half, all 3-pointers to help the Knights open an 18-point halftime advantage.

“I hit a couple shots, got the confidence going, teammates had confidence in me,” Biel said, “and we just started to get things going.”

It’s safe to say that Biel’s performance caught the Lions off guard. Biel is normally a key reserve for the Knights, but made the most of his starting opportunity on a night that honored the team’s seniors.

“We caught him on a good night,” said Langford Area coach Brian Schuring. “The kid was in a zone tonight. … You got to give him credit for shooting the ball the way he did tonight.”

The Lions tried to make adjustments in the second half, but Biel added another trio of 3-pointers to go along with another basket as Christian stayed in control.

“He had a really good game. We came out of the halftime break. He had, I think, five at halftime and I was like I haven’t seen any film on him,” said Langford junior Kassen Keough. “We tried to adjust in the second half, but it didn’t work too well.”

Keough had a big game in his own right, pouring in a game-high 36 points, on a variety of shots, including five 3-pointers.

“We rely a lot on him,” Schuring said. “Usually, he’s in a zone like the Biel kid is.”

While Keough scored about a dozen more points than what he averages, it was not enough against the taller Knights.

“It was tough. We knew they were shooters. They’re big. They’re long,” Keough said. “We knew that coming in. … They’re a good team.”

Christian also received a major contribution from Dylan Hofer, who finished with 13 points and caused havoc with his defense.

“Dylan doesn’t run out of energy and he’s always around the ball,” Rohrbach said. “He looks like he has 30 points every night because he’s just always around the ball, and rebounds, and gets steals, and makes great passes and runs the floor.”

Jacob Samson added 11 points to the Langford total. The Lions are 3-14 and are making progress heading towards the posteason.

“I was proud of the way we played,” Schuring said. “We took a step forward today.”

The Knights improved to 14-4 on the season and have games at Redfield and at home against Groton left to close out the regular season.

When asked what the team will need to do to have success in the postseason, Biel responded, “I think we should just keep playing the way we are with the utmost confidence.”

Rohrbach knows there is still work to be done as Christian gears up for a postseason run.

“It’s great for our kids to see the ball go through the hoop and the confidence to get high. … We understand that yes, we’re a good team,” Rohrbach said, “but in order to be a great team and in order to be a state-caliber team, we got to continue to A, get better, and B, want and be hungry and make sure that we are doing all we can to get ourselves ready for that region little run.”
