The streak is over.

Aberdeen Central ended its six-game slide with a 48-34 girls’ basketball victory over Huron in Eastern South Dakota Conference action at Golden Eagles Arena Thursday night.

“Really good. We needed that one to get our momentum back and keep our roll going,” said Central sophomore Lauryn Burckhard. “Now, we gotta go for the next however many games we have and try to win those.”

Central was able to secure the victory without starter Kamdyn Borge, who got injured against Mitchell on Tuesday. Ava Yeske stepped into the starting role, with freshman Camryn Albrecht playing some key minutes off the bench.

“We’re not sure what’s going on, but she’s out for a little bit, so it’s tough to see her go down, but she’s a good leader on the bench. And she’s a really positive spirit,” said Central coach Paiton Burckhard of Borge. “(Albrecht) knocked down a shot when she could and then Ava on the other hand, wow, it was nice to see her score with some confidence.”

The Golden Eagles scored their first six points of the contest (two each from Taryn Hermansen, Kenadi Withers and Burckhard) on second-chance opportunities, a theme that would continue throughout the game.

“It was very key. We’ve been working on rebounding, offensive rebounding all week and you know, just having Taryn in there, she’s a beast,” said Lauryn Burckhard. “We get those rebounds and it’s just a different game for everyone.”

The ability to take advantage of the second-chance points helped the Golden Eagles to gain separation against the visiting Tigers.

“Rebounding like that is a mindset. You don’t just like walk up there and just casually snag one. That’s a mindset being like nope, I’m getting this one,” said Coach Burckhard. “And I thought you saw that from everybody. They really knew that they were gonna outrebound and they did a nice job of it.”

Central opened a 14-4 advantage thanks to a 3-pointer from Yeske before Huron made back-to-back threes to trim the margin down to four points.

Yeske helped the Golden Eagles regain the momentum by knocking down two more 3-pointers,  finishing the second quarter with nine of Central’s 13 points.

“That was super exciting,” Yeske said, “and we gained a lot of momentum.”

Central had a 24-14 lead at halftime before Huron scored 10 unanswered points to slice the deficit to a single point with 2:27 left in the third quarter.

“With Huron, it’s really easy to slip into the way that they play. They’re chaotic, there’s not a lot of structure, but they’re good at it,” said Coach Burckhard. “They don’t quit, they never quit, and you kind of saw us relaxing on plays or wide-open shots from them or a layup. Or we were fouling.”

Burckhard called a timeout to try to halt Huron’s momentum. The timeout proved useful as the Golden Eagles scored on their next three possesions to end the quarter up 32-26.

“It’s just super important sometimes to reel them in really quick and be like, ‘Reset here, we need to score.’ We hadn’t scored. We were on a dry spell, and we just needed to get something going,” the coach said. “I think that put them at ease too, just being like, ‘OK we can score. Let’s get a stop and let’s build off of this.’”

Central ended up sealing the victory by outscoring the Tigers 16-8 in the fourth quarter, and outrebounding them 8-5. Lauryn Burckhard ended with a game-high 15 rebounds. It’s an area she has worked to improve on lately.

“I feel like in other games, I’ve been a little slow in rebounding, so trying to get back up there in rebounding is good,” she said. “Even when you don’t have very many points, rebounding is the other best stat, so that was my goal.”

Yeske led a balanced Central attack with 12 points. Withers followed with 11, and Hermansen finished with nine.

The Golden Eagles, 8-7 on the season, travel to Watertown on Tuesday to take on the Arrows, who they defeated 51-36 in mid-January.
