PIERRE – The Aberdeen Cougars got their starting goalie back and avenged an overtime setback to Oahe with a 4-1 girls’ hockey win on Saturday afternoon.

Chloe Vikander, who has been out with an injury for about a month, was back in goal and it showed as Aberdeen allowed just a single goal after surrendering six to the Capitals a couple of weeks ago.

“We are still battling some illness, but we certainly played a more complete game than we did last time,” said Aberdeen coach David Sandvig. “Helps to have Chloe back in net and Addy Keller back as a forward.”

The Cougars scored the first three goals of the game and Keller had a hand in each one of them. She assisted on a first-period goal by Rachel Siefken, scored the first goal of the second period on an assist from Raniesa Mattke, and then assisted on the team’s final goal scored by Kaylee Dixon, also in the second period.

The Capitals got on the board in the third on a goal from Brylee Kafka, who exploded for five goals and an assist in the previous matchup against Aberdeen.

Vikander finished with 19 saves in her first game back.

The same two teams square off again today.

Sandvig said each game takes on added importance as the regular season is winding to a close.

“We are coming down to the last weeks and the girls need to focus on getting healthy and playing their best hockey here on in,” Sandvig said. “Each game will be a battle until someone hoists that cup in a month. (Sunday) will be another tough one.”
