PIERRE – The Aberdeen Cougars exploded for three third-period goals to cap off a 4-0 boys’ hockey win over Oahe Friday night.
Aberdeen used its depth to pull away from a 1-0 lead through two periods.
“This was a great team victory for us,” said Cougars coach Chris Medill. “We rolled four lines all night and the guys did a great job wearing Oahe down. The message from the get go was to wear them down and capitalize in the third, and that’s just the way it worked out.”
Devon Fischbach opened the scoring with a second-period goal on the way to a hat trick, adding two more goals to start the third. Lleyton Kleffman assisted on one, while the other two were unassisted.
Carter Vilhauer capped the scoring with his first varsity goal, also unassisted.
Meanwhile Carson Hundstad turned away 21 shots in goal for the Cougars.
“Carson had a great night,” Medill said, “and just like he always does, he made some big saves when we needed him to.”
The Cougars, 10-6 in league play, have back-to-back home games this weekend against the two Sioux Falls squads. Aberdeen hosts Sioux Falls East at 3 this afternoon at the Odde Ice Center, before taking on Sioux Falls West at 4 p.m. Sunday.
