It was a record-setting performance for Taryn Hettick at the Christian School Gym Friday night.
The Herreid-Selby Area sophomore tied a school record for three pointers in a single game to help power the Wolverines to a 59-20 non-conference win over Aberdeen Christian.
The elite sharp-shooter nailed eight three-point field goals to tie a record she now shares with teammate Katie Allbee.
“We’ve been playing together since we were in first grade. And it’s been our dream, three-point records and we always talk about state record and trying to break it,” said Hettick. “I guess it’s just our competitive nature that’s in both of us. But we’re both happy for each other in any accomplishments that we have.”

The Wolverines scored first before Christian’s Arianna Johnson answered back with a layup of her own.
“Oh, it always feels good to score,” Johnson said.
The Wolverines came out firing, scoring 18 points first-quarter points, half coming from beyond the 3-point line.
“When the ball goes in the basket, it’s a little easier. And we hit it early. We hit some shots from the outside early,” said Herreid-Selby Area coach Ryan Yackley. “That was kind of the domino effect for us, and it just kind of seemed to open everything up and took advantage of what we needed to at the right time.”
While the shots were falling for Herreid-Selby Area, it was the contrary for Christian.
The Knights were finding quality shots, but weren’t able to get many to fall.
“It’s annoying that they didn’t just go in the basket. So yeah, I’ve been super happy with the fact that they can get shots,” said Knights coach Andre Cobbs. “At the start, we weren’t getting the best shots and weren’t getting good shots, so now it’s just let’s get those shots to fall.”
Hettick hit her first two threes of the night in the first period, and followed it up with two more, shooting 4-for-4 from 3-point range to start the game.
“I guess it was just my night. Kudos to my teammates for getting me open shots when I needed them,” said Hettick, “and having confidence in me to put the shot down when it matters.”
Hettick’s two 3-pointers contributed to six of the Wolverines’ 20 points in the second quarter, with four other Wolverines making their way onto the stat sheet in the second quarter as well.
“That makes it a lot easier to do what you need to do,” said Yackley. “It just makes the offense a little bit better and at this time in the season going into playoffs, this is what we want to see.”
The Wolverines led 38-14 at half, and did not waste any time coming out of half to increase their lead. Hettick hit her fifth 3-point shot of the night on an inbounds play despite the Knights knowing what was coming.
“You heard me screaming it. It’s about to happen, then it’s coming, then they’re about to shoot it,” said Cobbs. “We watched that on video. They saw it, they knew it was coming and then it happened.”
The Wolverines scored 13 straight points before the Knights were able to find the basket in the second half.
Johnson, who scored six points, was faced with a tough task throughout the game being guarded by 6-foot-2 Jordyn Rossow, who made scoring in the paint difficult.

“She was definitely big to get around. She’s really strong,” said Johnson. “We tried to just drive it into the hoop and then try to get it passed to me. That’s kind of what we tried to do to score basically.”
Heading into the fourth quarter, Hettick needed one more 3-pointer to tie Albee. Hettick wasted no time as she hit it one on the first shot of the period.
“Huge night for her. And actually, that’s kind of exciting because number 21, Katie Albee, and her actually share the Wolverine record right now. So, it’s cool they share that 3-point record,” said Yackley. “Kudos to Taryn. She did some really good things. To the whole team who got her the ball when we needed to. … A big shoutout to ‘T,’ she definitely earned that one for sure.”
Hettick led the Wolverines with 27 points, while Allbee added 15.

Sophia Eichler also added six points to the Christian total.
The final points of the game were scored by Christian’s Erika Moulsoff, who hit a 3-pointer, a testament to the Knights of never giving up.
“The score doesn’t always look the best sometimes, but you see they’re playing super hard,” said Cobbs. “So that’s what I like. That’s what I can get out of it.”
With regions beginning next week, the Wolverines (11-8 on the season) are playing solid basketball at the right time.
“I feel confident,” Hettick said. “We’re playing good basketball right now.”
Christian has a Region 1B game on Monday.
