
A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Feb. 16-22, 2025:
Last year on Feb. 18, 2024: Aberdeen Central won its first region wrestling championship since 2015 by qualifying all 14 wrestlers for the state tournament at the Region 3A tourney. Winning individual titles for the Golden Eagles were Eston Foss (106), Porter Lozenski (120), Rayden Zens (126), Mason Schrempp (157) and Ayden Gisi (215).
10 years ago on Feb. 19, 2015: Aberdeen Roncalli senior Brayden McNeary now has 1,005 points in his career. He is the fourth Cavalier to hit the milestone (Cary Hornaman 1,314, Kent Clausen 1,114 and Ryan Hansen 1,071). All wore No. 23 except for Clausen.
20 years ago on Feb. 19, 2005: Mikayla Barondeau (19 points) and Lyndse Ruenz (18) led Leola-Frederick to a 60-45 win over Eureka, who got 21 points and 10 rebounds from Alex Hoffman.
30 years ago on Feb. 18, 1995: Aberdeen defeated Dell Rapids 143-121 in the first round of the SD amateur state basketball tourney. Kevin Burckhard scored 31 and Scott Bosanko added 24 for the winners. Aberdeen would go on to beat Vermillion 143-136 in overtime in the semifinals (Scott Kusler 36 and Bosanko 31) and Mitchell 131-120 in the championship (MVP Bosanko 31 and Burckhard 24).
40 years ago on Feb. 16, 1985: Coach Jarvis DeBerg’s Miller Rustlers won the State B wrestling title. Wade Lager was Miller’s only state champ, and now has a career record of 171-18-7. Lager is only one of five high school wrestlers in the nation with 170 or more career wins.
50 years ago on Feb. 19, 1975: Coach John Bruce’s Britton Braves won their seventh straight District 1B Tournament title. Britton beat Hecla 59-55 behind Larry Johnson’s 20 points. Tyler Teline had 13 points for Hecla.
