NSU winter squads winding down, spring teams starting up

Winter sports in Wolves Athletics are nearing the end, with the baseball team finally hitting the field this upcoming weekend.

Wolves wrestling finished their regular season with a 21-14 dual win over Minnesota State, who is receiving votes. The Wolves started off winning three out of the first five matches which came from Sloan Johannsen, Braydon Mogle and Wyatt Turnquist.

The Mavericks found themselves back in the match after gaining a 14-11 lead with the final three matches remaining. Damen Pape regained the lead for the Wolves with a major decision victory, followed by a decision victory from Tyson Lien. The dual came down to Nathan Schauer, who took the mat with the Wolves up 18-14. Schauer closed off the night with a 5-1 decision to finish off the regular season for the Wolves.

The NSIC Swim and Dive Championships took place over four days with the Wolves taking ninth place. The best finish for the Wolves was sixth place in the 800 freestyle relay from the team of Haley Osborne, Emma Moore, Abbegael Nynas and Brianna Back.

The NSU basketball teams hit the road one final time in the regular season with the men dropping both contests, and the women splitting on the weekend.

The men’s team lost to #24 ranked Concordia-St. Paul 87-66. The Wolves trailed by three at half but got outscored by 18 in the second half. Kaleb Mitchell was the leading scorer for NSU with 16 points, followed by James Glenn with 14.

The women’s team lost to 12th-ranked Concordia-St. Paul 75-69. It was the opposite for the Wolves who trailed 45-25 at half but were not able to mount a second half comeback. Madelyn Bragg had 23 points on the night, followed by Rianna Fillipi who finished with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists.

In Duluth, the men fell 83-52. Tobi Obiora was the leading scorer for the Wolves with 14 points on 77.8% shooting from the field. Ethan Russell scored nine points off the bench.

The women beat the Bulldogs 77-59 in a game that started hot for the Wolves, who outscored the Bulldogs 22-6 in the first quarter. Bragg brought in her fifth double-double of the year with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Michaela Jewett added another double-double to her resume as well with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

In that contest Rianna Fillipi broke the school record for career steals with two on the night, giving her 262 career steals. The previous record was held for 25 years set by Jammie Coyle who played from 1996-2000.

The NSU Track and Field teams competed at the SDSU Classic with 37 top-10 finishes, four event victories, and three new school records. Chris Weber won the 60m, and Julian Scott won the 200m. Alli Jackson won the 600m and Seth Martens won the 300m with both hitting new school records in their respective events. Summer Carlson broke her own record in the 800m.

The NSIC Basketball Tournaments are just around the corner, and there is a key game Friday night for the women’s team. The Wolves will face off against Sioux Falls at 7:30 p.m., after the men’s contest at 5:30 p.m. The USF women are only one game behind the Wolves in the NSIC standings. The Wolves currently hold the number 4 seed, which a spot that secures a first-round bye and a trip straight to the Pentagon in Sioux Falls, however a loss to the Cougars would complicate things.

On Saturday, the NSU women will face off against 17th-ranked Southwest Minnesota State at 6 p.m., with the men competing at 4 p.m.

Wolves Baseball will finally hit the field with a four-game series against a receiving votes Minnesota State squad in Pittsburg, Kan. The first game is Friday, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, and one more game on Sunday.

Softball is back in action with three days of doubleheaders in Topeka, Kan. Their first of six games will start Friday against 13th-ranked Central Oklahoma followed by a game against Washburn. On Saturday, the Wolves will face Central Missouri and Emporia State. The Wolves’ final two games will be against receiving votes Pittsburg State and Fort Hays State on Sunday.

The Track and Field Teams will compete at the SDSU Last Chance Meet on Friday and Saturday for one final chance to compete before the NSIC Indoor Championships.
