HENRY – Aberdeen Roncalli once again used a big second-half effort to surge past Florence-Henry Tuesday night as the Cavaliers put together a convincing 56-32 non-conference girls’ basketball victory.

The Cavaliers found Florence-Henry hanging around within a single possession at the end of the opening quarter, but a big effort out of the locker room to begin the second half helped fuel Roncalli’s victory. The Cavaliers outscored the Falcons 22-7 in the third quarter.

“Second half, we played with a lot more energy,” said Cavaliers coach Derek Larson “First half we kind of went through the motions a little bit, got into some foul trouble.”

Maddie Huber was forced to sit a good portion of the second quarter with some foul trouble, but returned to the court in the second half. That, Larson said, made a big difference for Roncalli in the final half.

“I thought we played with a little more energy, and made some shots and defended a lot better second half compared to the first half,” Larson said.

Rylie Voeller made a trio of 3-pointers and once again found herself atop the Cavaliers’ scoring chart, finishing with 15 points. Claire Crawford added 10 points, including two 3-pointers in that third stanza. Ava Hanson joined them in double figures with 10 points.

“We’ve been through games earlier in the year we did not shoot the ball well and it seemed the only way we could score was inside the paint,” Larson said. “It makes things a little easier when the ball goes in. Definitely been the case the last 3-4 games.”

With the end of the season rapidly approaching, Larson said he likes the direction his program is trending.

“After we got through that gauntlet of Hamlin, Sioux Falls Christian and Milbank, we knew we were going to have to play better than we did at that point,” Larson said. “Tonight our first half wasn’t great, but I think we are trending in the right direction toward the postseason right now.”

Roncalli, 14-5 on the season, will host Deuel in the final game of the regular season Thursday at Roncalli Gym.
